Colin Cheng's

If an establishment gets a zero rating, that effectively means they have no food safety Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan in place.
That's the equivalent of having no H&S risk analysis plan.

The theory is that if they haven't identified the HACCP's then how can they plan to handle food safely, how can they train staff etc.
That's the reason why many places improve dramatically after getting a 0. They know what they're doing but they can't prove it.

Manjaros got hit with one of these years ago and they were never the same! They were like a better and cheaper version of Nando’s !

Not a fan now.. must like the taste of rat shyte

Interesting reading some of the replies, and peaking my interest even more.
I think its a safe bet that these inspections are done like a VAR review, in that it is individual peoples interpretation of laws.guidelines and that a different inspector could have given a different review, and that sometimes - not all, not many maybe, but sometimes - these 1 man inspections will result in a rating, which another inspector would not agree with. Either way i dont like chinese food so i wont be eating there anytime regardless.

My experience is that the grottier the establishment, the better the food.

Although, 8 pints of Red Stripe and 4 double vodka Diet Cokes may alter my palate somewhat.

It's okay Mr Cheng, just close for a couple of days, do a deep clean and sort out colour coded chopping boards etc. I'm sure you'll be reet.

Maybe @Randy can weigh in on what a zero means they've failed on?
I can. A few examples.
Serious failings in more than one area.
Lack of paperwork for fridge and freezer temperature checks, cooked food temperature checks, cleaning schedules.
Kitchen in disrepair, for example, missing floor tiles if they have them or ripped vinyl flooring, cracks in walls.
Cross contamination of raw and cooked foods. Dirty work surfaces, fridges freezers, food prep areas.
No hygiene certificates held by food handlers.
Signs of vermin/insect infestation or actually seeing any of the above on site during the visit.

0 stars are not handed out willy nilly. Any food standards inspector will tell you they are not about shutting places down and punishing places. They want to help and to educate and to keep the public safe.

@VestasBoro you can't "buy off" these people, they are 100% neutral. Any star rating can be appealed and a visit rearranged as soon as any problems have been fixed. Like an MOT test though they have a legal duty to publish the original findings of the visit and once those issues have been rectified the star rating is published again.

We used to get a regular takeaway from The New Regent, at Acklam shops - used them for years.

They ended up in bother over raw chicken being marinaded in the kitchen sink. They were temporarily closed and had a refit, bouncing back to 5 stars shortly afterward.

I'm sure they're still very clean, after that shock, but we've never been back. They took our family's health for granted.

RIP to China Garden on Croft Av - it was our go-to but never reopened after the COVID lockdown.

100% Neutral, find that hard to believe that in some cases John Doe turns up at a takeaway, having had either a bad experience before, knows the owner etc something in his mind which is swaying him before he even walks in the door. Not always, but this will happen.

Like if i had to referee a game WBA v Random club id remember about 20 year ago walking back to the car some WBA fan shouted he's going home to bang my mam, daft stuff like that sticks with people of all walks of life. I'd go into that game hoping WBA got stuffed, and if there was a way i could - within rules of the game - assist in helping WBA lose, i would.

Many years ago (pre-Navy), I used to work in the casino in the Dragonara. All the restaurant/takeaway owners were regulars - Harry Chow was an absolute gentleman, Bobby Kwok was alright...most of them were nice folks.
Colin Cheng was an extremely rude, arrogant and cocky twāt.
Lemmy as was his brother , I also worked in that establishment.

When did you work at the Casino?

What do you do for a living? Just so I can hopefully avoid such an unscrupulous person. I bet you’re a copper 😂

These responses from you are just weird. So because you hold grudges from years ago and let them cloud your judgement you find it hard to believe that everybody else is not just like you and is incapable of being neutral and unbiased, despite the fact it could cost them their job and reputation.
These things are often peer reviewed and as pointed out above, they can be appealed if the business owner thinks there has been something untoward in the rating.
But no, that's not good enough for Uncle Vesta, because he's somebody who will let some niggle from decades ago cloud his judgement in doing the job he's paid for.
I'm glad you don't work for me and that I don't have to deal with the place you work for.

He shouted 'he's going home to bang my mam' meaning you (vesta) are going home to bang that WBA fan's mam? or did he mean that he (WBA fan) is going home to bang your (vesta's) mam??
