Corovirus and the private sector.

The Labour Party and GMB union are calling for the government to use empty beds in "plush private hospitals" to ease the pressure on the NHS. The union says there are about 8,000 beds in the UK's private hospitals. Should the government take control and use the private sector in this time of national emergency?

The private sector should have offered in response to it being called a pandemic as part of a joined up healthcare response plan anyway. So, yes, for once, I believe the government should engage with the private sector.

Yes.

The private sector has piggy backed off the NHS for long enough.

what medical staff are you going to use for these empty 8,000 beds ?

the country is 40,000 nurses light as it is.

Good question. I would presume it would be private sector staff, and agency staff. Plus all the retired nurses and doctors that Boris is going to recruit. Good luck with that one. The most vulnerable being exposed, and the potential for an early death isn't a great recruitment advert.

We'll be sleeping in shop windows then, with cuddly hippos for company.
Quite possibly. Though I imagine the odd hotel is a more likely candidate. They won't have any other visitors so why not.

I've probably posted this elsewhere, but it's an interesting analysis of what is happening around the world. Just in case you're not fully aware of the scale of the problem. An ex-pat Iranian friend tells me they're digging trenches to bury the dead in Iran. He doesn't believe their numbers - but he is biased.

Since it seems most of the country is isolating itself anyway, the numbers may not be as bad, but how long can we keep this going?

Private companies like Rolls Royce to be asked to manufacture ventilators. Hopefully they'll downsize their turbofans a bit.

Mr Hancock needs to get a move on ... an artist friend delivered a new piece this week to a client in Chelsea. The gallery at the back of the house contains medical supplies and equipment, AND a ventilator.
