Cringingly bad defence of the tories on Sky News

Just sat and watched Kay Burley destroy a young tory councillor trying to defend the government. She 'Tore him a new one' as the saying goes. The young man Harrison Altman Vardy ( not a NE name clearly) from the stockbroker belt of Walton on Thames, Surrey ( there's the clue)

Himself and another lady tory voter and government supporters views were forensically picked away with valid argument and facts. Engrossing tv, as sad as that may sound.

LBC meanwhile spent 2 hours batting for the tories whilst demonising strikers and protesters and playing the home secs speech blaming labour for the mess

Nothing really to beat after Truss’s abject performance.
I can remember how Burley was taken off the air for 6 months for breaking Covid rules, so nothing to admire there.

I'm not a great supporter of Kay Burley as she tends to monopolise interviews and make it about her, but this time she was excellent. Two amateurs trying to defend the indefensible being questioned by a seasoned, informed interviewer made for great viewing.

I made that rookie mistake of sticking LBC on this morning before 10am when I usually listen to James O'Brien.

I also had BBC2 on this morning and they were in Sunderland having some sort of debate, and caught an older woman suggesting Boris Johnson come back, and explained that 'we all done it' when asked what about the lockdown parties.

🤦‍♂️

I heard some of that. There was a woman in tears about her situation but when asked how she voted said Tory and something about Johnson having a cheery disposition (or similar). She also said she thought Starmer was 'dull'. Should idiots like this even have the vote? Shouldn't there be some sort of sentiency test?

I listened to a bit of that debate on 5Live and heard a few contributors admit they were in the most dire of circumstances. Unable to afford to heat their homes, funds squeezed and the general cost of food etc. One particular lady was in tears speaking about her disabled child and not having sufficient funds to take him to college in South Shields. Simultaneously that same lady said she had voted Tory, praised Boris Johnson for getting stuff done and suggested she didn't like Starmer or indeed trust him. Go figure.

Sorry @ThePrisoner. Just seen your post.

I don't know whether to feel sorry for them for being so brainwashed or angry.

The "good" of democracy is not that it produces the most competent government, but that it produces a representative government.
Unfortunately this means idiots have the right to be represented too, and I'm sure we can all agree we have plenty of those, even if we don't agree who exactly they are.

I see the appeal of having a minimum educational standard to vote, but that can be seen as biasing an election towards those classes who can afford to persist with education.

Mind you, there has been some reversal of political affiliation in recent years: the Torys increasingly becoming the party of choice of the working class, and Labour the party of the educated middle-class, so maybe the bias wouldn't be so clear cut.

Stockholm Syndrome ?

I believe that this was mostly due to desperation and feeling betrayed by the government. Unrealistically the Tories had managed to apportion blame for the Economic Crisis at the end of the Labour Government onto Gordon Brown (despite all evidence that he actually did as well as could be expected and better than many). The promise that leaving the EU would get rid of all the cheap foreign labour and get everyone working seemed credible and the Tory landslide was on teh back of frustration that this was not being delivered. Now, I think that most recognise that Brexit was a mistake powered and enabled by unchallenged lies.

This is where the need for a responsible and unbiased mainstream media is, in my opinion, most clearly shown. The lies of Leave were trumpeted across many of the papers and repeated as a valid view by organisations like the BBC. Foreign influence and money (Russian) were ignored and here we are. Sadly, many voters are still entrenched on Brexit so we will of necessity have to move slowly back to closer ties to our neighbours. Customs and market synchronisation and perhaps somewhere down the line full membership once more (or perhaps like Norway, simply join Schengen)

I think that partially explains the movement of the working class to the right, but doesn't really address the link between education and support for Labour.

This report highlights the difference between "student seats", 71% of which were Labour at the last election, with 13% Tory, and constituencies with similar proportions of young people, but a lower student population (74% Tory, 23% Labour).

Lots of grey areas I know (difficulty defining a student seat; link between education and class, etc.) but the differences are conspicuous.
