Dental implants anyone?

Anyone had them?
I think I need 4 or 5 so my gnashers do their job properly. Now weighing up the pros and cons of having a 'dental holiday' to Slovakia because it's cheaper there. My dentist quoted me a minimum of £1800 each whereas abroad the price seems more reasonable. I can't afford nearly £10k for a few gnashers.

Advice welcome.

They are good but expensive. I'd be cautious about going abroad though, as you need a few visits to check the bone has grafted, that they are fitting correctly, etc. Could be a very expensive job if you need 4 or 5!

Thanks. I thought it was a bit ambitious to think the job is done in a few days.

having things like implants done abroad isn’t necessarily a bad move. The cost difference can be huge. However, the regulation (hygiene, materials etc) is much less regulated. Therefore there is a much less predictable outcome. Do you research.

Also, your current dentist will tell you to f*ck off if you come to them with aftercare problems. In the current litigious world you don’t want to be touching anybody else’s expensive and ambitious work with a barge pole.

Some ‘dental holiday’ places have aftercare centres in major UK cities. This is an essential thing to find out.

In the process of getting mine done, my private dentist quoted me 36k for full implants top jaw and 4 implants and rest crowns on lower jaw.

I decided to book a dentist in Antalya Turkey, £5600 incl flights and all inclusive hotel, two x 7 night trips.

Did research and it was the number one review in Turkey

Went in March, 4 hours in the dentist chair (wasn't pleasant, I also had to have bone grafts in my top jaw)
I had 7 implants fitted in my top jaw, 4 implants in my lower, was then told to re-book in 4 months time.

April .....my stitches started to fall out, which was a relief, I could finally eat better.

May...., something didn't feel right in one area, I then got a massive infection, my dentist sent me to hospital for 3D xray, one of my implants was not fitted correctly in my bone, hence the infection, got in touch with Turkey, they said, " they will remove the implant", and if the gap is not too much they will still fit the teeth, however if the gap is too large, they will fit another implant, which would mean another 3-4 months recovery time. :(

June.... After taking 3 courses of antibiotics, my infection finally went, and my failed implant is now protruding through my gum.

July... Going back next Friday 14th, fingers crossed the gap between the implants will be ok.

Had two in Budapest about 10 years ago. All pre work done in London. Couldn't reccomended them highly enough. Also Hungary is a beautiful place to visit, even if it's for your teeth to be fixed.

Company I used we're called Vital Europe and their dentists we're much nicer than any British dentist that I've ever visited

Forget implants - get them extracted and dentures made around whatever decent teeth you still have (if any) - looks better, is cheaper, you don't have to go to somewhere dodgy in Eastern Europe, and zero potential issues in the future

Thanks for this.

Thanks for your story. I really hope it works for you.

I know it's difficult when you're unable to visibly see my teeth but would you be able to give me some advice please. I'm with a private dentist and he's very reluctant to treat my teeth. On my last visit he'd mentioned that he may have to refer me to a specialist.

My teeth are badly worn down due to dental erosion, which was caused mainly by me drinking a lot of fizzy drinks during my younger years.

One of my premolars on the bottom is badly affected. A lot of the enamel has worn away off the top of the tooth. My dentist mentioned that he'd like to crown my teeth but said a crown would just fall off, which I struggled to understand, as I thought the tooth had to be shaved down anyway for a crown to be applied.

He also monitored something about operating on me, which would "open up my bite" before he could treat the teeth. I think that was what he said.

I think his main concern is that if he tried treating my teeth and it went wrong then it would affect my bite.

Ive got type2 diabetes been spitting blood for a long time and developed loose teeth, not registered with an NHS dentist so went for a private checkup.

Diagnosis was severe gum disease for 3 lower teeth to be extracted and denture fitted cost over £1200

low and behold put it off and the 3 teeth just fell out. Now the same is happening with my top teeth

When i was diagnosed with type2 diabetes gum disease wasnt even mentioned to me, i can live with ED but losing several of my teeth is deverstating

Jeez that is awful. How long did you leave it between your last dentist visit and that private checkup given that you mentioned you'd been "spitting blood for a long time and developed loose teeth"?

I'm currently going through this process now with a dentist in Saudi Arabia. It's no cheaper than in the UK, but more convenient as it's where I'm currently based. I had 2 missing teeth at the back of my upper jaw, with a dead and capped tooth between them. First stage was to remove the existing tooth.

Then I waited two weeks for that to heal and went back for the bone grafting. That was interesting in that they hit a vein that they didn't intend to and it was like an abattoir, with blood spurting everywhere. Two hours later, the bone was all inserted and the gum stitched.

I go back next week to have the stitches out and then in around six months time (if I'm still here) they will insert two pegs which will hold three teeth. If I'm somewhere else I should have an upper jaw with sufficient bone for a different dentist to insert the pegs.

I've only paid for the extraction and the bone work so far and it was £2,700. The implants and teeth will be priced separately. One interesting point, is that virtually the entire dental practice is staffed by women. My three person team were all women, two expats and one Saudi. I hadn't expected that.

Don’t regret having mine. 10 years ago and still very strong and feels like your own tooth. Baulked at the cost - £2000 plus but worth it. An investment in oral health and lifestyle.

That sounds harrowing!

With all this talk of bone grafts and blood I think I'll stick with falsies if the time comes.

Go watch a few TikTok's on it from dentists - they explain a lot of the risks and what is done differently over there and why they don't do it etc

I had mine done in Goa. No complaints and had them checked by a U.K. Dentist when I got back. Dentist was amazed at the standard of the work, undertaken by a specialist Professor of Dentistry, and the cost. Took the risk based upon recommendation and the fact I couldn’t afford 30k. Paid a third of that.
