Dijksteel facing 'substantial' spell on sidelines

Wonder if 34 year old Lee Peltier who has played 5 games in 2 years will be able to cope with an extended spell in the side. Considering Warnock had to try Bamba at LB who also hasnt played for two years and never played in that position in his life, does this not show the stupidity to loan Coulson and Spence out when we were so short?

We have a large youth set-up precisely for this sort of thing. The manager was talking up young Dodds this time last year so maybe it’s time to give him his chance.
We wouldnt have had to do that if we didnt send Spence on loan who was very capable at this level, and considering the back up option for LB looks to be Jones at the moment, Coulson again would have been a much better option.

We could realistically be at the stage in a few weeks where Bola is banned and Dijksteel is injured, and we just dont have the players to cover both positions

Just makes the decision to let Spence go on loan even more baffling. I was the first to say 'sell him' but to loan him with no replacement seems bizzare. I can only presume he really wound Warnock up and he just wanted shot.

It can't be based on his 'ability'. He can more than do a job.

Throw in the fact Fisher is crocked😕

We have back ups like Bamba and Pelts who have played very little football in 2 years. Interesting to see how they stand up.

His fitness record isn’t that great whilst he’s been here, and knowing that plus Fisher being out for the season with a 34 year old as back up it doesn’t look a great decision to loan Spence out.

Maybe we need to revert to 3-5-2 or 3-4-3….

Christ, just exactly how many cover players per position should we start the season with?

Dijksteel is first choice right back and he was fit at the end of the window.
Fisher is deputy right back and was injured.
Peltier was signed as further cover at right back.

McNair and Howson can both cover at right back if essential.
There is a U23 set up and top class academy to provide further options.

Spence seems to be getting better and better in some people's minds the longer he is away. He was an awful right back and a right winger who never goes past anybody and has zero assists in his career.

Bola is first choice left back and he was fit, to all intents and purposes, at season start.
There is no clear left back cover and that was a gap that Warnock has made clear he expected to be filled.
Coulson is a LWB at best and much better going forward than defensively, where he is really exposed.
The mistake was not closing a deal for left back cover.

The hysterical reaction to the weird chain of events at right back ending with this over the top maligning the loss of waster Spence, is in itself hysterical.

Didn't Paddy McNair play right back several times for Man Utd? Injuries happen. I don't understand why we loan players for a season though, either sell or keep!

Yes, I think that is exactly what we will do 3CBs and Tav and Jones/Hernandez in some combination.

Bring your sleeping bags, we're in for some tedium.

that sounds horrendous, I can’t remember the last time we played well with 3 cbs.

Bad news hey, considering we’re thin at full back on both sides.

Personally I don’t love the 3 and playing our wingers at WB. Think the extra defensive responsibilities will make them more negative, and it would be a big shame to waste their abilities going forward.

I’d play a four and any idiot at right back. You can get away with it in this league, McNair or Howson could do it. More importantly shore up the middle for extra bodies in defence and give the other team something to worry about with our best attacking players playing further forward.

Eliaquim Mangala is still without a club..

back three of

Fry--Hall--Mangala

maybe?

plus there was talk of us looking at Robbie Brady

We knew Fischer was out for the season anyway, Peltier wont be able to cover an extended spell in the team so we were only one Dijksteel injury away from a problem and considering he is injury prone anyway its not really a surprise its happened

We let Coulson go knowing we had no cover for Bola, how many other clubs would loose their cover before signing a replacement?

It looks very much like we've dropped the ball not bringing in Kean Bryan and Ciaron Brown

I seem to remember Howson doing a decent stint at RB previously and the benefit of that is introducing Payero and Siliki at CM.

This is where a manager shows his true strength...
Yeah, Howson was really good at right back. Good footballer is Jonny Howson, not the goalscoring number 8 we all thought we were signing but we’re lucky to have a player so versatile who is just a decent footballer wherever you play him.

Can’t wait to see Payero start. From those training videos and his cameos he’s got a vicious shot, which I didn’t expect, and a bit of nastiness about him - can’t wait to see how he does.
