Director of Football

As a genuine question, which clubs have a director of football that people would use as a measure of success?
Clubs that you can directly attribute the success towards the director.

It just seems like that latest thing that people have latched on to as reason for our struggles.
It was the fact we weren't playing 2 strikers a few years ago.

I don't know,

I just feel that we lurch from one to aonother, pragmatist to purist, with the wholesale squad changes this requires..

Maybe we sould take a longer term look?

I think every successful club has a director of football or football director. My sons 1 to 1 coach is studying for his masters in football directorship like you I didn’t even know it was a thing until I met him.
Apparently it’s not an easy qualification to achieve either he already has all his FA & eufa coaching qualifications he had to pass all of them first before he could go for this one.

Are we going bust if we don’t get promoted this season? Not sure that’s entirely true.

I can just imagine how the DoF role would be viewed if we didn’t have instant success. It’s a lot of money to pay just so that the fans have someone else to blame.

i was being a bit over dramatic to say bust.

I meant what chance have we the season after next if our play relies on wellying it up to a behemoth and 'picking up the peices'. Ideally i would like to see some kind of long term vision. Whilst winning short term of course!

Well we had a long term vision with Woodgate and after six months everyone wanted him sacked. The thing is fans say they want a long term plan but usually they just mean they want a period of sustained success, and they’re not the same thing. Preferably with nice football thrown in too.

And, of course, everyone wants sustained success and lovely football.

Ahh to be fair, after a quick Google, most of the big clubs do seem to have one.
But there are also plenty of unsuccessful clubs in our division that have one too.

Everyone's idol Burnley do not seem to have one also.

I’ve no doubt at all everyone will have one in the foreseeable future. And they won’t all win promotion.

All the teams with god-tier recruitment like Leicester, Dortmund, Sevilla, Ajax, Southampton, Chelsea and er Leeds have a long-standing director of football.

Plenty of teams with terrible recruitment have a director of football as well. Spurs seem to flip their director of football every couple of seasons, which makes a mockery of the point of having one.

In the end having someone with that job title isn’t a quick fix. It’s about finding someone really good and committing to that model and vision for 10 years.

I think even when we had Orta, we didn’t fully commit to it. It was as clear as day which signings were Orta ones, which were Gibson ones, which were Karanka ones and probably some Gary Gill magic scouting team ones too. Have a look at our transfers from that period, there’s no way the same brain was signing Jelle Vossen, Rhodes & Downing, and Victor Valdes.

'This summer was the perfect time to move NW to DOF on a part time basis, and bring in a younger man for 1st team duties.
Jimmy Floyd would be my choice, people will have their choice, we missed a trick I think waiting until NW leaves next season.
I actually think NW would be happy with that, giving them more time in Cornwall, but still having involvement.

Nah, that would be insane! I would hope we would be out of the picking names out of a hat game. If Warnock leaves I would like us to bring in an experienced manager

Whatever is decided, I'd like to see us appoint someone who has no previous significant connection to the club. Over the last 50/60 years our success has come from:
Stan Anderson
Jack Charlton
John Neal
Bruce Rioch
Bryan Robson
Steve McClaren
Aitor Karanka
None of these made their name as players for the Boro.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has experience, saved Burton from relegation last season , they were bottom and looking dead and buried when he went in in January .

Not sure if crystal palace have been mentio? Think i read today dougie freedman is there DOF in article about viera joining them.
