I read that article earlier today. It comes across as terrible but I haven't read the original paper yet.
If sky are reporting it acurately it's bad research.
dna becomes damaged, potentially, on every cell division. This is nothing new. The type of damage and to what extent is the important factor. The second obvious issue with the research is that the subjects had smoked previously.
It's not the first paper that has attempted to make the connection but it is the first to draw this conclusion. It's good that the research is continueing, of course.
Finally it could just be the reporter sensationalizing the original paper too. Using quotes out of context, for example.
