I've just read this on the BBC regarding if Newcastle finish 3rd: -

Newcastle fans may not agree but finishing third in the group and dropping into the Europa League wouldn't be a bad thing. They'd be one of the favourites to win it, behind Liverpool. It would be a good chance to go deep into a tournament, build up some European experience so they can come back next year and smash the Champions League.

I'm in two minds on that.

Gives the biggest chance of knocking them out of Europe entirely, but it also gives Newcastle a bigger chance of progressing if they win their last two matches.

They are good at that, but they probably feel they should be able to retain their top talent a little longer and challenge Bayern.

It really is amazing how often they’ve done it over the years. It was only really Lewandowski they didn’t get money for. Even that was a deliberate decision by Dortmund I seem to remember.
