Driving licence points

If I get 3 pts tomorrow for a simple 38 mph in a 30 mph zone, how long do those 3pts stay on the licence. ?
Background , its not me , honest Gov , was trying to help a foreign friend in London who got UK citz a couple of years ago , but has racked up a couple of speeding points fines n letters and wanted to know the score. I initially said 2 years , as that was my current knowledge, but looking online produces no definite answer (shocked by that ) but some sires report 3 years activiely on the licence and then another 1 year by consideration, ie if a Judge wants to look at your past history it will show up as not yet absolutely fully nullified although not accounting to points accumulation.
Whats the current score ?

Points remain on your licence for three years from the date of conviction ( eg the time you accept a fixed penalty or plead guilty in court) for the purpose of further endorsement.

If you get 12 points in 3 years you are looking at a totting up disqualification ( 6 months first disqualification second disqualification 12 months) unless you can persuade the court a disqualification would cause you or another exceptional hardship.

I believe you have to disclose them to an insurance company for an additional year so four years when obtaining or renewing insurance.

Remain on your license for 4 years, but cant count against other convictions after 3 years i think.

P
don't you need to disclose them for 5 years to insurance? Could be wrong but i think admiral, who i’m with was 5, unless its different depending on the insurer.
I think it depends on your insurance company.

Thinking about it again you should tell them before you actually renew.

Thanks all. . I'm a bit shocked. I normally keep up on things but this has passed me by entirely due to me being points free in 28 years. He won't be happy . it's a few weeks away from the 24 month date of his first 3 points and he brought it up because it was going to be a monkey off his back and was going to enjoy driivng in a less risky position. I'll pass on the news.

I wouldn’t say 38 in a 30 is simple. It really is a matter of life and death. Your “friend” deserves everything they get!
It's simple as a way of detailing a non reality specific example. If I had said just speeding , a whole load of questions would arise as to what the road type was, how much over the speed etc, what was the licence status, would go on indefinately. Normally for a UK friend I would tell them to find out all about it themselves, but he is Romanian not long been a UK citizen , and got the points in South West London local roads, on being over 30mph, doesn't know any driver friends down there, and I've never met anyone else who is so bad at life admin issues, that I felt I had to help. I've learnt something myself now , all good.

So he regularly speeds then?

And feels hard done by? Tough ****.

Shortly after passing my test I was caught going 88mph on the A19. 3 points and £100 fine. Nobody to blame other than myself, I was late for work and going too quickly, despite it being a spring morning and the road was practically empty.

If he's speeding around London he's a ****.

Is there a way to check driving points? Like you can Boro loyalty points?

My wife had a letter saying she MAY get some a few months ago but that was all. Nothing further.

Who was the letter from? I'm not aware of letters saying you MAY get points on your licence, a FPN gives you the option of accepting points + a fine or contesting the charge in court.

If she's heard nothing within months of the letter then I wouldn't worry about it.

One of the many police shows on channel 5 showed a guy doing over 100mph on the A1 near the Airport/A19 turn off and he was issued with a section 59

Surely speeds in excess of 100mph should have resulted in points or a court appearance?

pretty sure it was DVLA. Can’t remember exactly what happened now tbh, but I’ve always wondered whether she got any points.

I seen that last night actually, i was amazed he only got a section 59. Surely that sends the wrong signal to everyone, more so as he was all over the road too.
Should of been reported and possible ban, at the very least points and a fine.

Driving at over 100 mph in my experience on conviction the sentencing starting point by a court will be a relatively short disqualification but courts could put points on your license instead,

That sounds unusually lenient.
