Ebor Festival York

I’m assuming there’ll be some teessiders on here heading down to York on Saturday. With strikes affecting trains operating between boro/darlo and York, are there any potential alternatives for travel? Is anyone running a coach or know of someone who is?

I’ve been on a Friday before for MacMillan Cancer Supprt day. It was a really good day.
I can think of lots of things I’d rather do than get a train to the Ebor or John Smiths day with the creme de la creme of Teesside’s whoppers.

We done John Smiths last year but just got a 16 seater bus there and back. It was a good day but the queues were massive. After the second race, I stopped drinking as couldn’t be bothered with the queues. Just waited until we got back home.

For years, we arranged days out for John Smiths day with work. We used to get a coach and just pay into the enclosure, taking our own booze and camping chairs. All of us would chip in some money and a couple of the girls would sort all of the food.

We’d get there early doors to get a good spot near the winning post and crack open the drinks.

It was a more much laid back way to do it, and no stress about dress code and cooking in a suit. Always found those days much more enjoyable than going to the main stands.

Unfortunately it’s one annual trip that’s died a death post Covid. Most of us work from home 90% of the time now and social events just don’t get the same take up as they once did.

Sounds class that mate, nice and chilled. You all working from home makes it even more important to get it arranged for next year!

Used to love that meeting back in the day.

In the heady days of corporate hospitality I had the horrible task of organising the event over 4 days for the company I was working for. We always had a marquee and, to make sure all guests (around 20 each day) were looked after, I had to host it every day.

It was a tough gig.

Absolutely the way to do it, certainly was for us at least.

We did try to revive it this year but got very little response. It’s a combination of many things really and some old regulars have now left too. You do need the numbers to make it worth while.

We did a smaller event this year at Thirsk Races but I ended up dropping out as it was the Millwall game - regretted it at full time! 😆

It’s definitely dropped off though. I manage a team at work and I always try to make sure we have one office day a month where we pop out for drinks or food after. It makes a big difference with team spirit and keeping people happy.

Stopped doing York on big days two years ago. Bar service was shocking - 45 minute queue for a drink with people ordering 3 or 4 pints each to avoid waiting again. However it was the blatant drug taking and so many young blokes in suits off their face that killed it for us. Toilets had lads all over the place doing lines of Coke. As a bloke with daughters, seeing young women so out of it and completely vulnerable sat / laid on the floor both shocked and horrified me. They had no idea where they were with dresses riding up and completely exposing underwear. Must have approached the course officials. 3 or 4 times to ask them to help with such young girls. Stopped being about the racing and simply about how much you could shot down your throat and sniff up your nose. Not nice

I live a KM away from the Racecourse, and this is generally the reason I wouldn't go again. Much nicer down there when the races aren't on - exercise, other events etc.

Or even bother going up Taddy Road, into town. Or my local pub. Not worth it when the racing is on.

Used to love it 10 years or so back, chilling on the grass with a case of beer. Train started getting too stressful though, so we started getting minibuses. But it was just getting too busy and then inside where you literally couldn’t move. So haven’t been since about 2018.
