Just having a new kitchen fitted, and the electrician said my my fuse box is over 50 year old, needs replacing and all sockets in house need replacing bonding etc. £1500!!!.fire hazard waiting to happen so on with the job now. He said, people keep their cars maintained but the vast majority of houses he visits are a fire hazard or electrocution waiting to happen as no regular maintenance is carried out
A wake up call for me!!!

I moved in 2021 and had to get an Electrical Inspection Certificate. They recommended replacing the main breaker box, so I had it done at my expense. The vendors paid for the needed work.

If your ‘fuse box’ has actual fuses in it then it needs to be removed. On the plus side Beamish might take the old ones off your hands.

I just had my consumer unit replaced, when I got my car charger point fitted the chap told me my board didn't have a RCD. My old consumer unit was over 30 years old so I just had that replaced with a built in RCD, cost was £550, work was done in 3 hours and the electrician did a perfect job.

Builder did a great job with the extensions but took it on himself to do the electrics. Massive fail

Old fuse boards indicate that the wiring is old. if it is PVC cable then it will last for a very, very long time - the older rubber stuff perished after a while. The insulation is always tested by any inspection.
Domestic wiring now has the same kind of legislation as gas has had for years. So, things are a lot safer than they used to be.
All boards have to be metal, nowadays which is why you will always be advised to change an older board.

This sounds like a rewire but is way too cheap for a rewire, but if it's not a rewire and you're paying that much, you might as well get a rewire

A rewire does all your electrics and wires

Sockets are easy to change as a DIY job. £20 for a nice looking one with 5v usb or usb-c or even less for plain white

Seems pointless leaving all the old wiring in if changing everything else? as will just need doing soon anyway

While I understand his sentiment I'd point out that there are a few more moving parts in a car and also parts that are designed to be consumable that need replacing.
