Engel

Have we ever had a player who tries to get rid of the ball as soon as they get it as Engel?

Some of his first time passes decisions yesterday were beyond mental.

Has some good attributes but he is one of the most frustrating players I have ever watched for Boro.

Think he has to be back up next season.
Think it was like the 91st or 92nd minute and he volley the ball first time as he received it on the touchline with no one close to him. Lost my rag and shouted ‘take your F***ing time’ 🤦‍♂️

Glad I’m not the only one noticing it. To be honest it’s not just him, a load of them do it.

Interesting comments engel was better than obrien, Mcgree, forss and lath yesterday.

It's odd that he is the focus generally. Of course on a thread about engel you would expect him to be discussed. I just find it interesting that anyone thought it necessary.
I think you are right, I thought O Brien and McGree looked like they were going through the motions.

Engel was the least of our problems as to why we didn’t win the game.

The Centre midfield is your driving force of the team and the only one who played well was Howson, which is a worry going forward as a club looking for promotion.

You’re right of course, Engel like a couple of others are the boo boys that seems to get focused in on when the result doesn’t go our way.

As for him and others releasing the passes too quickly they are definitely told to do that to speed up the attack. Great if it works.

I think with a full season of championship experience and pre season behind him Engel could be really good next season.

He is one of the few players we have that play with aggression.

Often left isolated yesterday on the attacking side of things - but tried to force passes that weren't there.

Left back would not be top of my list of replacements if Engel/Bangura are fit.

I would say it was because he constantly finds himself in good positions with both time and space and in the main IMO makes the wrong choice I want him to do well but he is still making school boy mistakes game after game.

I think as a whole the full squad is under par at present even fully fit.

Recruitment is yet again going to be very important in the summer, looking at our squad and if players leave we need a rebuild again.

It's not unfair to Engel to criticise him yesterday. He was statistically the most wasteful player on the pitch in a Boro shirt. 21 passes that didn't find their target. Pretty poor.

As for people claiming he's the new boo boy. He gets more criticism than other players because he's consistently one of our poorest players. Both defending and in possession. No one has a vendetta against him. He's just not very good

I thought Engle was fine yesterday.

First, we kept our 3rd clean sheet in a row and, one goalmouth scramble aside, never looked like conceding.
Second, I felt he was asked to do a hell of a lot down the left side; McGree constantly drifted further towards the right, leaving Engle the lone player down the left. Without the 3rd center back for cover, it asked too much of him, and he was occasionally sold out by team mate playing bad ball when he was in an advanced position.

I've seen him player better going forward than yesterday, he was hit and miss, but over all, he was one of our better performers

Can’t agree with that at all to be honest but each to their own. Second half he was shocking

I’m struggling to see how you could reach that opinion.
Some of his passing was diabolical.

First time passes? Not a single one of our players play first time passes.
It’s always a minimum of 2 touches which contributes to us being so slow in everything we do

He is not good enough, he showed that earlier in the season. Don't get me wrong he gives 100%. But he is just bang average continuously gives the ball away, and time and time again the opposition winger goes past him on the outside.

I like his attitude just not the required standard for a team chasing promotion.

It's worrying we signed 3 left backs this season and gave a new contract to another. Not one of them seems up to scratch. Bangura potentially the best of the bunch but Iv never seen him get a run of games due to injury.

Had a vapid game were he couldn't do much right, it happens.

I think has improved a lot since we signed him, is he the answer time will tell.

Decision making is a huge attribute that often separates the best players from the average/inconsistent. Engel did make some poor decisions yesterday but he wasn't the only one,
Trying first time passes from the touch line on a volley and it going straight out of play was the lowlight for me. Just control the ball get it down and compose yourself. Has next to no composure at times.
The thing for me is that it's the execution that's lacking, not the decision making. He wasn't making those types of passes in dangerous areas.

He has vision and awareness - the volley down the touchline and the attempted lift over a defender in the last minutes would have both been excellent balls had they be executed correctly.

For me, you can train the execution side but you can't train that innate ability that combines awareness of those around you and the vision to see a pass.
