Europe holiday this spring/summer?

I'd like them to ban foreign holidays till next year, but I don't think they will.
Helps ensure that countries are closer to being fully vaccinated before exposing people to the associated risks.

I pretty much live to travel. Nothing beats zipping round a few European cities doing my photography, soaking up the history and the local beer each Summer.

I am not hopeful at the moment. I'm due to submit my PhD next month, and I've been motivating myself for the last year with thoughts of trips away. However, I'm pretty certain it won't be happening any time soon and I don't really think it's in the power of out government to make it happen. Even if they turn round and say we're happy for you to travel from May 17th onward, I doubt many destinations will be receiving tourists.

I'd usually cross a few international borders when doing this, but I think it would be crazy to plan anything like that in the current situation.
What's the subject of your PhD?

What I dont quite understand is what the specific risk is that won't always be there?

Pretty much everyone who is vulnerable has received their first vaccine and in the next few weeks will receive their second. If the argument is made regarding variants and the risk of returning tourists bringing them home, doesn't that mean we can literally never go abroad ever again as we will always have variants of Covid 19?
Basically this yes!

No foreign holidays and no pesky foreigners allowed on our Island, sounds like Farage just got his second wish🤔

I live to travel the world, the UK doesn't hold the same allure for me, i've already missed a yr, to miss another yr will be hard to take, particularly when using the logic there will always be variants so what therefore is ever gonna change?

The only positive is i can tidy up my financials & maybe do up my home instead! This deadly dull existence can't last forever though!😨

I've booked flights to Malaga for mid June.Have things to sort out with my house there. Will have had both my vaccinations by start of May.Hope infection rates here and in Andalucia allow a travel corridor with the UK.But won't be the end of the world if not.

I'm all for vaccine passports & travel corridors for less affected countries though!
I am convinced though, that as commercial pressures are brought to bear on Johnson, he'll buckle as usual, because as the great buffoon has demonstrated on many occasions throughout this pandemic, the £££ is always king!

For me it's the balance between relative risk of the virus and the detrimental effects of continued lockdown.

Every single thing we do comes with some kind of a risk, but that risk is balanced by the positive aspects of taking that risk.

I just wonder if as those who are vulnerable are vaccinated (and studies show the vaccines do protect against serious illness occurring even on variants of the disease), whether the relatively very small risk is outweighed by the positive aspects of normal life continuing, and whether the continuing detrimental effects of lockdown-unemployent, poverty, isolation, depression, undiagnosed medical conditions etc are of greater harm than something which shouldn't cause serious illness if you've been vaccinated or are not in the vulnerable category.

I genuinely don't know, and have parents in their 80s, so would never want decisions made that would put them or others at risk, but I'm not sure if the balance suggested in the comments made yesterday by the government adviser is right?

Very much agree!
But they're intimating that people oughtta be able to survive on a UK based holiday only this yr!

People can and will "survive" on a UK only based holiday this year. It's not critical to life to sit in the sun on a foreign bit of land for a week or 2 as opposed to here. This notion that foreign holidays are essential is nonsense. I love travelling as much as anyone, but not going abroad this year will in no way harm me, instead it provides an opportunity to explore the UK more

But that's the point by July everyone will be vaccinated, and yet still the government advisor yesterday said basically "no foreign holidays this summer " I don't quite understand what will be different in the future?
The difference will be that in the future the virus wont be as rampant as it currently is, and likely will be for much of the year, in many popular foreign holiday destinations

It will definitely be a messy summer in terms of travel restriction but I am confident that some countries will be welcoming UK travellers.

In terms of importing risk we are (will be?) one of the lowest risk destinations for inward travel.

In terms of "brining the virus back" I think we'll probably continue with the red list approach, highlighting countries where variants of concern have originated.

I think in an effort to save face the gvt may stick to the 17 May proposal but put the onus on the consumer to meet the requirements of the country they're planning to travel to?

I'll be travelling as soon as we're allowed. The Government have stated time and time again this virus will be soon be endemic (forever in the community) and once numbers are down and the majority are vaccinated, that's likely as good as it is ever going to get. So unless you plan to never travel again, I don't think it makes much difference if you go abroad in 3 months or 3 years.

It is ok to say that everyone can go on a UK holiday but where. I live in North Devon in a holiday area, we already have a problem in lockdown. All the esplanades are full of campervans parked up overnight and for some all week. There isnt anywhere to park at the moment never mind when the tourists are here.

Devon and Cornwall are pretty crowded normally in July and August. Holiday accommodation is already full, If you apply social distancing of any sort this will only compound the issue. The locals (not those in hospitality) are opposed to an influx of outsiders.

I would advise to go somewhere that may be quieter and avoid the normal holiday hot spots as I can forsee some major problems.

In the future more people abroad will be vaccinated and the authorities should have variants nailed like they have with flu. The last thing we need this year just as we've got everyone vaccinated is people going abroad and bringing back a variant that current vaccinations can't cope with. It would potentially take us back to square one.

I can sort of understand that view if in 3 months you were to go somewhere that has low numbers of cases, but would you be happy to travel to somewhere that has several thousand per day? It's not about never travelling again, that's being a bit melodramatic, it's about tempering the 'need' to travel abroad this summer
