No mate, they are simply just called " Rollers "Surely 'steamroller' is just the name used by a lot of people to describe the modern day equivalent? Even though they are no longer powered by steam.
So what should they be called?
(I'm only asking so I don't get laughed at by mucky faced workmen wearing yellow jackets by the side of the road).
Would 'big wheeled heavy squasher' be acceptable?
There is a light roller, heavy roller and a multi roller.
They still use water with a detergent added and this is to stop the bitumen from sticking to the roller itself which prevents the ripping up of the surface.
The bitumen of course is piping hot when first laid and naturally steam will appear from the newly laid surface.
