Fantasy Premier League (FPL)

Amazed how popular this is and seems most of my mates play it these days. Obsession with some and thats all they talk about in the pub.

That said I do take greater interest in the Premier League as a result. Crazy Gameweek points wise this week. Just imagine being a member of this league and getting a red arrow on 140 points!!

Nightmare week, I've dropped from 95k overall to 350k the past few weeks.

As you say in the OP I had kind of lost interest in the PL a few years ago but FPL changed that.

You know you are a bit obsessed however when you join the Norwegian version for something to play over the summer...

I've been top of my league all year and I had a decent week this week with 83 (my 3rd highest of the season) but 2nd place in my league played their Free Hit this week and got 147. They captained Salah who only managed 3 points in a double gameweek or it could have been a lot more. I still have players to play but Guardiola said Haaland is missing and I've already had Palmer not play. Haaland will be replaced by Doughty who got a minus and then I have Foden who could be rested. I was at 63k overall a few weeks back after climbing a lot from over 1m OR but I'm back to 104k now.

I barely watch any PL footy so I base everything I do off stats and gut feeling. It doesn't make me watch more football.

I played my Free Hit in 29 when there were hardly any players playing. I was top 200k for the week but that only needed 32 points. I would have been better saving it with hindsight. I didn't really have a long term plan this year on when to use my chips so I think that's backfired a bit in these closing weeks. I had planned to bench boost this week but loads of injuries made that impossible.

Had a stuttering season but smashed it this week with 130+ Free Hit. Wildcard and bench boost to go.

Whoever Karl Durant is he’s smashed it 👏

I enjoy it but rubbish don't pay enough attention to the fixtures, double fixtures, injuries etc.

Seems to get bigger and more popular with each passing season.

There's well over 10m FPL managers now and yet although the game itself is free to play the prizes are pretty poor.

They've just recently introduced a new format - FPL Challenge - however, it's just a glorified FreeHit every week, with a couple of added perks each week.

I play FPL, but I'm much more invested in SkyFF. The prize is £50k for first and if you put together a decent strategy, and ensure you don't miss any deadlines then you have an actual chance of winning it (albeit a small chance, but a much bigger chance than winning FPL - which requires a huge amount of luck).

There's much less luck and much more skill involved in SkyFF. The same people are usual in the top 100 at the end of the season. Whereas in FPL, you rarely see the same people in the top 100

I used to like it but got bored of it. I won the league me and my mates set up a couple of times and then lots of them seemed more bothered about colluding to stop me winning.

I play it but I would prefer it if they sophisticated the scoring system a bit more so it wasn't solely focused around scoring goals. I think the fantasy versions of other sports like NFL and AFL are much better as points rack up for other actions such as touches, tackles etc

Yahoo used to do one which was great. Points for everything from passes, tackles, shots etc. The FPL version kind of forces a template team and there is very little variation in people's teams. It really frustrates me they haven't done anything better with the subs over the years. There is too much luck involved with players getting injured or being rested etc. It's not a skill to be able to predict what line-up Pep is going to go with this week or which games are going to be called off last minute because of snow, covid or the death of a monarch.

There are the same people at the top. If you look at it as a % instead of an absolute number then the same people are in the top regularly. It's obviously harder to have the same person winning multiple times because there are so many more people playing. Getting a top 10k finish is really difficult and there are people with 10 or more top 10k finishes. The best managers have probably never won it but they are consistently at the top end. Top 4k over the last 10 seasons on that.

What is an excellent rank has certainly changed over the last few years with the increased numbers. Top 1k used to be the target, but then top 10k and probably top 100k is a v good achievement now.

Always pull together a team pre-season and that's usually the last time I look at it. Don't watch much EPL these days anyway - that's probably the first time I've seen Everton this season (last night) and there's a handful of sides I haven't watched at all.

That's really good going. You must have had at least one really high finish in there? My last 10 is 480k but my last 5 at 72k is more representative of the years that have retained my interest because there were some years I made a team and then lost interest early. Even in the last 5 years I have. The covid years with random fixtures just being cancelled meant any planning was pointless. All time is 200k.

I think top 100k now is easy to do by sticking to the template. Pushing through that to beat the template means taking some risks. I'm not playing in any money leagues this year and I've left everything until last minute so I've lost out a lot on things like team value and best use of my chips.

yeah, came 657th in 15/16 and then a few other top 50k, 11k in 21/22. I think you are probably right on the template though there is still quite a bit of variance on individual decisions. I've tried to be a bit different the last few weeks (WC early, still have FH for GW37, going without Haaland) and it has cost me really.
