FIFA are to issue their own armbands for captains

What hypocrisy? Am I missing something?
You are.

You don't see the hypocrisy of companies claiming to support LGBTQ+ rights while pumping millions and millions into a World Cup hosted by a country that happily admits to suppressing those rights?

The rainbow flags they plaster all over their goods is nothing more than a marketing tool to them. They use it to make money, not because of any kind of support. They don't give a toss. Hypocrites.

Yeah I see that. But they are sponsoring the World Cup, not the country it’s in. Bud have sponsored other World Cup. It’s not a Qatari thing. Like I said. It’s powerful to spread the message of equality in a country that doesn’t have it

My brother is gay, he will be watching the World Cup. He’ll still go to McDonald’s. Is he a hypocrite?
Yes. But that’s up to him and his conscience. I’m very critical of this World Cup and of Qatar but I’m going to watch it. I’m a hypocrite too. We all are, every single day. Let’s be honest.

Absolutely it's important.

Much of their sponsorship money will end up in the hands of the Qataris. A much more powerful message would be to not sponsor the event at all.

Will it though? Surely it’ll go to FIFA. I approve of the message they are spreading

Is your brother wandering round telling everyone he's not going to watch it. Is he profiting from the WC in Qatar. Then no.
The post above yours quite succinctly explains why it is tremendously hypocritical of companies to take the pink pound and then to be sponsoring this world cup.

I jsut don't think it is. They are sponsoring a world sporting event. Not the state that that is hosting it

That’s the problem, FIFA have given the World Cup to Quatar and the best we can seemingly do is wear arm bands

England probably should just accept they’re their and either go along with it or sacrifice personal participation and leave
Nope, the best we can do is refuse to do what they demand. It becomes a symbol of fighting oppression. Fuq them, it's more important than ever that we wear our armband not the FIFA approved one.

This isn't politics, it's about equal human rights and if that seems like politics to members of FIFA then they're fascist abusers.

England could go home, but why punish our players? IT would be better to win the thing and wear rainbow shirts and F*(k the Qatari royal family t-shirts after the final whistle

If they are pointless symbolism, why do you think Qatar/FIFA are so desperate to ban them?
exactly this, change requires symbolism to rally people around. Symbols have power for good and bad be it the swastika and KKK hood, or the crucifix, or taking the knee, or a CND sign. People are mobilised by symbolism

"The issues in this World Cup go far beyond homosexuality..."

Its entirely unacceptible to brush aside the impact of Sharia Law for LGBT people in Quatar.
Its illegal to be anything but Heterosexual in that tiny country.
GazC_MFC`s brother would be arrested and imprisoned for up to three years if he refused to hide his sexuality.
In addition to the law - the ban on homosexuality [reallity] means that LGBT people are open to blackmail, intimidation, violence, attacks, separation from their families and driven underground by the state and the usual rent-a-mob mentality.

Roofie, I agree but I am making the point there are issues including corruption and human rights abuses that corporate rainbow branding does not address

I’m actually trying to say let’s not forget the other issues 👍
I concur with your sentiment. (y) All those other issues are inextricably bound together in the little despotic state.
The big companies and our own government are up to their necks being complicit with abuse and torture, but they walk a fine line of denial - trying to act as paragons of virtue and morality. The reality is - they stink of corruption and everything to do with ££££££, and the power that goes with it.
I shant be watching it - for one I dont have a Tele and I wont be watching it in the pub, because its boring and expensive buying coffee and soft drinks for 2 hours
:(

ps. England will win naff-all anyway!
