I totally agree. That was in answer to "why would someone choose to go to Chelsea over Boro". I'm saying it's not just financial. The chances of succeeding are better at a club like Chelsea because failure there is still likely to be a higher level than success at Boro.

Chelsea's model isn't to produce first teamers. It's to produce revenue. As @coluka says, it's more like a farm.
I wouldn't disagree in general for players coming through at most clubs. Because a lot of players who fail at Chelsea do usually still go on to have careers in the professional game. That's not the case for most clubs.

If he is as good as people say though, surely he's in a good position now. We've got a manager who trusts in youth, 3 first team players who have come through the academy in some form. Loads of players move on to have a professional career elsewhere. And we've had 2 academy players move directly to Premier League clubs in the last few years.

Then again, the lure of a move to Chelsea is massive. Even if it's a long shot, just being in with a shot of having a career in the Chelsea first team is a massive opportunity.

30m with 30m of bonuses or **** off.

The good thing is that to have appeare for our first team he has to have been registered with a playing contract. Chelsea were trying to get him 6 months ago and could have got him for minimal compensation if that is what he wanted. We would have received like 500k and then maybe a couple of mill in the future if he plays for England.

We now have some protection and can demand proper compensation if he chooses to go, or we fast track him to the first team if they can't match what we want.
He’s still 16 so I don’t think he can sign a professional contract. He will still be on scholarship terms, which I think means any fee is either agreed between the clubs or set by the EPPP formula.

His birthday is Feb so he won't sign a professional contract for a while. I hope he stays, if not I hope we get a substantial fee, and a sell on clause.

If he’s on scholar forms then that means they can’t come and just take him, he’s contracted to us. The EPPP would come in if he ran down his scholarship and left. If they want him they need to pay big

Let’s be real, they won’t need to pay big if they want him enough. None of these clubs ever need to pay big to poach academy players.

They will he’s signed to us.if he had turned down a youth contract with us then they could have taken him and paid some basic compensation, but it’s in our hands now, we have to decide what it’s worth

If he signed a youth contract with us, then that must hopefully mean he is happy to continue his development with us, which makes sense. Unless Chelsea offered him some crazy contract or promises, can't see this situation changing.

They won't. As I said, none of these sides ever have to pay "big money" for players they snatch from other clubs. They just signed some kid from Everton for £4m, and unless that's your definition of big money, I wouldn't say that's particularly significant. They just got some kid who was apparently the star of Newcastle's academy presumably for next to nothing.

On top of that, we don't even make anyone pay "big money" for our first team players, there's no chance it'd happen with a 16 year old academy player. We're soft as sh*t in the transfer market, and half the time we actively go out of our way to make things easier for clubs to sign our players that would otherwise probably go for bigger fees if they were at another club.

If I was him I'd be ***ed off they haven't bothered to update the u21s/u18s sections of the website yet and include a profile of him

Is fin cartwright a boro lad
Yes he is local.

I read something earlier about how until he is 17 regardless what his agreement is with us, he can still be poached. Hopefully this doesn't turn into another Nathan Porritt situation where some big club starts waving wads of £50s at him and it ruins his career. Clearly the kid has talent, and given one-to-one coaching, integration with the first team squad, and good family around him he can progress quickly. Massive risk going to a club like Chelsea with their current model and their penchant for treating youth players like commodities to be loaned around europe on a whim.
