Four days in Lisbon

So after some good advice on here I have booked four days in Lisbon, leaving Sunday.

Bringing the two wee ones (daughter who turns 3 on Monday when we're there and 10 month old boy).

We are thinking of going to the aquarium and I'd like to get to a beach one of the days but is there anything else we should be doing?.

Tuesday night is the Chelsea match so need to find a pub to watch it in.

Would also like to go to Benfica - they're playing in a semi final on Wednesday night. Anyone been advice on how to get tickets?

We went at the start of December (and got some great tips on here).

Book a free walking tour. It gives you loads of good info, and a nice way to see the city (very hilly tho). We used Guru walk and paid the lass €20 at the end. also get the circular tram which gives you a tour of the city. Tram 28 does a big loop.

Get a Navegante travel card which you load up at the airport and covers the metro, trams, trains and busses. We stayed in Cascais for 5 nights and were backwards and forwards to Lisbon 3 or 4 times (inc to and from airport) and had €20 each on the card. When we got back to the airport, we had about €6 each left on the cards which we gave to some travelling kids to use. Ridiculously cheap.

DON’T pay or queue to go up the “Elevador tower” in the city centre. You can walk up the hill, round the back and get to the viewing platform FOC.

Belem tower and monastery are beautiful.

Lots of pickpockets in city centre and on metro, so wallet goes in front pocket. People selling fake drugs in the tourist centre as well, apparently.

Book a meal at a “Fado” restaurant, to enjoy the weirdly amazing folk music.

Find the artisan food district. Loads of bars and street food, and locals supping cans from the supermarket whilst meeting and enjoying the music. The bars don’t even seem to mind you swigging beer you bought in the Spar shop in their premises. It’s a cool place to be and the food we had (Peruvian) was great.

As mentioned, Cascais is worth a day trip (45 mins train) if you’re based in Lisbon itself.

Great city

Go to Sintra definitely. They have a little bit of a micro climate there, so I’d check what days the best weather before you go.

Also for getting around I just used Uber, it’s insanely cheap in Portugal, going to Sintra for example which might take 40-50 mins will be around €17. Our hotel was about a 20 minute pleasant walk from the front, it was a similar time to drive back due to traffic, however they don’t charge on time rather so distance, cost would be about 3-4 euros which we’d get back on an evening.

Around pink street area for the Boro game, this has a the more touristy/boozy area which I’m fairly young so I enjoyed a night there.

Went July last year was the best city I’ve ever been too, keep dreaming about going back, all the locals are insanely polite and welcoming people, everyone I met was insanely proud of Sintra.

If you're happy to be out of the city, Intercontinental Estoril is your 'go to' luxury hotel in the region.

However if you're doing a city break for 3/4 days, you could do much worse than Memmo Alfama Lisboa - great location and super views.
