free lateral flow tests could end in weeks.

Wow what an attitude that is
It's true though...

I did not plan on developing a life long debilitating condition at 20 and then a further one at 35 that ruined my career of choice.

So you can take your opinion and place it squarely in your rectum.

Look what does every want here, we are 2 years on, 140 million jabs on, we have anti virals, we have a weaker varient (yes that could change), we have a hugely infectious respiratory virus that all scientists agree is here for eternity l, we are 3 lockdowns and chrost knows how many restrictions deep now, and all they have done is increased the length of the wave. The list is here forever, people who want a change in approach aren't uncaring, we cljust can't keep repeating this cycle for something that we now have vaccines, therapies for and for something that will be here for ever.

I do wonder thought whether the government are just interested in keeping the figures down, rather than actual cases, given their policy changes over the last week.
I understand that the current 14m total, 140k per day, is only the people infected for the 1st time. People testing positive a second time aren't included.

My point is that may be true of things like cancer etc but we can do something to avoid or lessen the impact of Covid so it’s not an inevitability you will catch it so fate isn’t really the issue.

If you think this is motivated by anything other than money

yes because I always want to follow Texas caring approach to universal health care.

I’ve just come back from the states and I was masked up from the minute I left he house to pretty much all day

in cabs
On trains
In shops
COVID pass to get in restaurant

so don’t make out that there’s no testing in the us as there is.
Is that what you want to happen in this country?? It doesn’t seem to have made anyone safer in the US

I suspect we will all catch this variant Zorro. It is so transmissible. Restrictions may spread the wave, reducing infections for a time. But as we have seen, not much is working, in terms of the restrictions we have put in place. In England and in the rest of the UK, who have slightly tougher restrictions, omicron is spreading uncontrolled.

I want us to start taking it seriously and not just pay lip service to it and let the scientists and medics make the call not right wing lunatics on the Tory back benchers.

Exactly, yesterday

I don’t doubt that but it unlike cancer etc can be controlled and avoided if people act accordingly. But yes the chances aren’t good.

My point though is I’m all for a long term strategy based on data and science but this isn’t that it’s ideologically driven and it’s not motivated by health.

Fair enough let the scientists and the politically motivated medics make the call but also let them be held accountable when their predicted apocalypse doesn’t happen. Also they can be held accountable for the generation of youth who have had their education and future lives ruined just to make people like you feel safe

I don't think it can be controlled with the current restrictions, Zorro. Does the severity of the virus require further restrictions? I don't think it does. We seem to be in a bit of a no-mans land. The virus isn't killing enough folks for the government to lockdown, and it is so transmissible that masks don't really impede it enough to make a difference.

Let's not talk about the foolishness of covid passports for events, they simply do not work, or there, at least is no evidence that they work. Negative tests for events might be a way to go, but it would really have to be bullet-proof as opposed to just spitting on the stick and registering the result.

Totally agree, vwe have to let young people get back to living, let them have their youth. We all come on here and talk about the things we did in our teens and twenty, these kids have lost 2 years of that now, well look back on this with a certain sense of shame

Wonder if this is a convenient way to quietly take away the testing option for a vaccine passport? Vaccines or pay for a test every time if you want to attend any event?

It’s utter madness taking this option away though, mass testing is probably one of the key things stopping this from getting worse, having people mixing with vulnerable people not knowing if they have a cold or Covid will just end in disaster

My life and health experiences have taught me that what's meant for you will not pass you by and I've witnessed many households where all but one person has tested positive and that one person never caught it and had multiple negative tests of all descriptions.
But it can pass you by, you can take easy steps to significantly reduce the chances of catching Covid or passing it onto someone else

JM, I don't think a virus this transmissible can pass you by. Some will have a natural immunity, so will never catch it. Everyone else, is very likely to get it, even if you take all advised precautions.

It has been reported a couple of times now on various news agencies as the first or second most contagious virus in history. I think german measles holds the record at the moment.

It won’t pass us by, but you can take fairly easy steps to mitigate the risk. Regular testing before being around anyone vulnerable or in a large crowd is surely one of the most effective?

I believe that it doesn't matter what we do now. It's so contagious and so common in folks.

Thats not to say that you shouldn't test before visiting an ealderly parent, for example. But, is everyone that elderrly parent comes in to contact with going to be as scrupulous as you? I suspect the answer is no.

It is so difficult to contain a contagion without seperating people, i.e. lockdowns, and often they don't work well enough.

Here come the pelters, but perhaps its time to test with symptoms only. This is here forever and we can't do 2 million tests a day forever, that money could go towards feeding children or helping with heating bills (not that this government would ever do that).
But it wont will it. They have never been interested in feeding children or helping with heating bils so why do you think they will start now. They could have been spending this money you talk about prior to the pandemic but they didn't and as I said they won't.
