What a bizarre situation.

Owed £17m in wages not paid (how - has he so much money he just hasn't bothered to check his bank statements???) so happy to sit and wait until he gets it. Which I'm sure most of us would do the same.

But meanwhile Barcelona, apparently critically skint, spend £100m on transfers. And now need to offload players to be able to meet FFP regulations 😳😳.

And I'm pretty sure these new players (and their agents) will have received eye watering signing on fees.

How can this be allowed to happen and what the f*ck are UEFA/FIFA doing about it??

Crazy.

It's not a case of checking his bank account. He accepted a reduced wage after signing his original deal. It was to help Barca out so they could register other players. He would still get the same pay but his wages would be reduced now and then backloaded later to make up for the money he agreed to give up to help them out. Barca's plan is to sell him before that kicks in. Basically screwing him out of millions that he agreed to accept later in his contract to help them out. You can see why he's in no rush to leave till they agree to pay this figure.

E.g. Signs for Barca on £500 a week. They say oh we are over budget. Please can you reduce your current wages so we can sign x player? We will now pay you £100 a week then after x number of weeks it will be £900 a week to make up for what you gave up. X date is about to kick in and his wages will rise - sorry we are selling you. You won't be around on that date so you never get the wages you had originally signed up for.

Give the lad a break, I’m sure many of us on here in the past have forgotten about that £17m we had in a shoe box under the bed 😵‍💫

Same as they’ve done for the pasty thirty years or more !!

He should take Barcelona to court and his lawyers demand that the club pays its deferred wages before committing to paying the wages of any new players.

What’s happening at that club now is absolutely disgraceful IMO. £1.3bn in debt and STILL allowed to spend hundreds of millions more on fees and wages. It’s disgusting. And the governing bodies watch on and do nothing.

The way Barca have dug themselves into this mess and the way they've behaved in trying to claw themselves out of it is really tarnishing the club (and reflecting poorly on football as a whole) and I wouldn't entirely be surprised or disappointed if they were to end up collapsing in the next few years going on this way. I suspect the Superleague will be resurrected as a desperate lifeline for them before that happens though.
