Gannets Diving off Marske

Just been for a walk along the beach at Marske. Loads of what I think are Gannets a couple of hundred metres out diving for fish. Never seen it before, they get some speed up

Be diving for sprats or sand eels at this time of year.

Seen it occasionally when there's hundreds of them bombing into the sea, looks like the waters boiling, took me a while to work out what I was seeing the first time I saw it from a distance

I once saw a Pelican in Fairydell. Or at least I thought it was a Pelican, it had one of those massive tub-like beaks and it was F***ing huge.

I know nowt about birds though, our lass told me they’re not native to England but I definitely saw it. Either that or I was off my lips on Mushrooms.

They looked pretty big compared to the other stuff that was flying about?
They were soaring up quite high, then about turning into a dive at the top of the climb and hitting the water like a dart

Sounds like a Gannett but I did see a few tern doing similar off Saltburn pier recently

I've seen both terns and gannets just off Sandsend in the past week or so, so both are about. You'll also be able to tell by the size of the splash (gannets are huge) and the black-tipped wings a gannet possesses.

For all I know about birds it could have been. I just remember being shocked at the size of the thing and how big it’s beak was.

Mackerel will have come into the coastal waters and they will feeding on them and the sprats.

Pelicans are huge and look like dinosaurs. The park outside buccs palace has three of them. They like to shock tourists by eating pigeons whole. The same park is also frequently home to some brightly coloured parakeets.

I was based at HMS Gannet (twice) at Prestwick airport near Ayr if that counts!

Slightly off topic but speaking of birds, has it ever been proven that parrots aren’t just a portmanteau of peas and carrots?
