Generous Gestures by Away Fans

With the seemingly endless posts relating to Derby’s dislike of all things Boro, I thought we should lighten the mood and remember times when we’ve been helped by fans of other teams.
I’ll start; travelling to Home Park took much longer than expected, and finding nowhere to park I eventually drive to the ground in desperation. The steward took pity on us, waved us into the directors car park, where I parked next to the Chairman’s motor. What a hero.
I think we drew 1-1.

I was walking to Pride Park a few years ago when I found two Derby season tickets on the ground. I was sorely tempted to hoy them into a bush and go on my merry way, but I decided to do the right thing and hand them in at the stadium in the hope that karma would repay me when the match started. Unfortunately it did not.

My favourite incident relates to a non Boro sporting event when I went to the 1982 Rugby League Cup Final at Wembley. My mate was at Hull Uni and 4 of us talked about going to Wembley. He eventually managed to source 4 tickets as Hull had initially sold out.
We travelled down on special trains from Hull decked in black and white and had a few beers and went to Wembley.

After about 30 minutes the teams came out and we were chanting for Hull when all of a sudden cans began raining down on us from behind. Yep the tickets as it turned out were in the Widnes end 😬. Several burley blokes around us kindly sorted out the dissent and verbal aggro and put a few behind in their place. They even gave us a couple of cans to share between us to apologise for the people behind. They looked after us all game and ensured we got no grief on the way out. I was gobsmacked the difference in attitude between rugby and football.

It was a fantastic game too, finishing 14-14, I dread to think what would have happened had that have been a football match.

You're a ruthless man, futureboy, handing them back in. The poor beggers might have got them back.

Went in to work this morning & as I walked in to the changing rooms I bumped in to a fellow operator, young Sunderland fan, he said, G I have something for you & handed me a 1974 Boro v Birmingham programme, he said he was in Durham indoor market & seen all these programmes from different clubs forsale & thought about buying me one, what a lovely thought, I was really chuffed, really made my dad it did (y)

Came across many away fans on various trains when my son was young.
As soon as they saw his Boro shirt they would strike up a conversation with him about the mighty Boro and couldn't have been kinder. He felt he was part of a big football family. Good memories.
I'll leave the bad experiences(ahem... Sunderland fans) for another day!

September 1984 Boro v Bradford and went with my dad to watch the 2nd leg of this cup tie. He hadn't been for a few years (since Murdoch's first season in div 1) and he dragged me into the away end - despite my protestations that this wasn't right. Thankfully the Bradford fans were in good spirits, even more so since they knocked us out and they had a good team at the time with promotion at the end of the season.

We probably had a better time in their end and had about 50 of them slapping us on the back and wishing us luck as we were kept in for what seemed like hours at the end. They then helped explained to the police that were trying to shepherd us onto the away coaches what had happened as no doubt we would have ended up in Bradford without them convincing the police that we weren't just hooligans trying to escape into the Middlesbrough night for a fight.

I was at the same game - as a Widnes fan - we had just moved to the area from the NE.

Went to the replay a few days later, at Elland Road - Widnes lost, obviously!

Coluka I was at that game!! 1982. I’m a Widnes fan. We had beaten Hull KR the final previously and fully expected to win this one against Hull too. My abiding memory of the game was Stuart Wright running the length of the pitch to score for Widnes.

Went to the replay at Elland Road and deserved to lose.

It wasn’t you throwing a can was it 😃

It was an absolutely terrific final, we thought you had it won till the late comeback, then we had the conversion to win it in the last minute or so and he put it just outside of the post. I couldn’t go to the replay at Leeds as I had to work unfortunately.
