George Boateng

Tough call that. Viduka for me was “We can win this”. George was “we can’t lose”
Hmm fair enough. I just felt like when Viduka was on the pitch, especially that season, we could get a result against anyone. In the end we finished mid-table and didn’t achieve much in the cups, but had we had better players around him who knows.

If we had a better and more experienced manager.

Nigel Pearson.

95-96 defence looked good, Pearson plays the full season.

96-97, Pearson misses half the season. The same defenders now look like they've never met each other before.
That really made me understand how vital it is to have a manager on the pitch, to keep people in the right positions.

You can have the best technical players in the world but it is pointless without someone to direct them.

The season Boro finished seventh, the spine of the team was Schwarzer, Ehiogu, Southgate, Boateng and Viduka. I remember looking at the line up every week and knowing that we wouldn’t lose if all of those were playing. On the other hand, if any one of them wasn’t playing, I feared a bad result. If my memory serves me correctly, which it may not, we were looking at potential Champions League qualification until there was a period in which at least one of those was out and we slipped down the league, eventually qualifying for the UEFA Cup on the last day.

In fairness we had an awful defensive spell from December-April that season.

I remember getting to Villa Park for the FA Cup Semi Final in 06. As soon as it was announced Viduka was injured I knew we wouldn’t win. He was outstanding at that point.
Yes although that was 2005/2006, the season after I felt he just totally carried the team and probably helped us stave off relegation for another season. I was absolutely gutted when he joined that lot.

That said, having listened to an interview with him (by Bernie Slaven) recently, from 2009, I can see it from his side now. The club messed him about and, as many other ex-players have said, it was mainly down to Lamby.

Now I have nothing against Lamby as a person or anything but it is an indisputable fact that a significant proportion of star players from that era have put their departure down to him.

Adama Traore. Half a season getting stupidly made some sort of example of by Gary Monk and we were doing nout. Half a season playing RW every week with Bamford in the middle and he dragged us up into the playoffs. He ended the season with most MotM awards in the division despite barely playing before christmas.
