Gold

After a little advice / guidance.

Wedding anniversary coming up and the theme is gold, so was going to buy a gold bar instead of the usual stuff. Though this would be easy but the more I look the more confused I get. I am only looking at spending £100ish give or take, more of a token gesture than an investment. Also I don't like gold jewellery so won't buy it.

I can see you can buy certified a bar, but this doesn't add any value just gives piece of mind (suppose that's the value) that it genuine. There are various types PAMPa, Heroes etc. But can't find anything to show me the difference or what it means.

I have the option to but pre-owned gold bars which don't appear to be any cheaper (well 30p). These look to be uncertified.

I can then buy PAMP 1g for £57.30 but Umicore is £61.50

Has anybody done this? if so any site recommendations, advise or pitfalls?

Although said wasn't initially doing as an investment I may actually look to do so in future

Thanks in advance

Bullion by post they’re buying and selling purely on the weight. At £1,500 an ounce you ain’t gonna get much for a hundred quid, but these are the guys if you want physical gold.

Would your other half actually want a teeny tiny gold bar? You don't like jewellery - but what about your other half?

I can't buy something I don't like and she knows this. Always try to get something themed each year and a little bit of gold is different, she will see it as thoughtful. She also has plenty of other jewellery.

You can't buy something YOU don't like, for someone else who might like it? Bit weird that, but if she accepts you're like that she's probably a keeper.

Or a doormat.

Wow, that must make present buying incredibly difficult. Do you at least give them the gift receipt so that they can take it back and have the cash or exchange instead?

No real relevance to your problem but a useless fact. I worked at a gold mine for 10 years in the process plant, and once held 3 20kg bars of 98% gold, each one about a quarter the size of a house brick. It's bloody heavy! Think it was worth about 3 million dollars at the time.

No..

Why would I work hard for my money and then spend it on something that I don't like regardless of who it's for. There has got to be something that she will like and I don't dislike.

For instance she wanted a pandora bracelet, which I think are awful and cheap and nasty. So went to beaverbrooks and bought her a silver pearl bracelet that looked better, was relevant to the whatever wedding anniversary it was at the time. Also I think she appreciates the extra thought that went in to it. She still got a bracelet she was after, and my money was spent on something I thought was worth it and meant more than the cheap tat she was after.

Oh and I only buy presents for her... she likes to shop so sorts everybody else out

No offence, but what a bizarre way of thinking.

I've bought my wife all sorts of presents I dont like, but my thinking was will SHE like it - if so then it works for me.
