We stayed in the Conrad hotel in Downtown and can recommend. Good quality with excellent roof top bar, nice location for getting around, quiet and close to the waterfront.
 
As the only criteria you've specified is "good" then I'll go for The Plaza which certainly meets that need.

If however you have a budget, which would have been helpful to state, then I'd suggest Public which is a little bit different to a normal hotel, but I've also stayed at a couple of times. It's designed by Ian Schrager (of Studio 54 fame) and the rooms are very minimal but the bars and communal areas are designed to be used far more than the room itself.

The rooftop bar has some amazing views, and it's in SoHo so a little away from Times Square and the uber touristy bits, but around some great places to eat and drink.

good luck. I would make sure you have a packed list of thinks to do outside unless you are Rockefeller the hotel is not going to provide much entertainment.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. Going mid May for 4 days . Will go through them all tonight .
 
Get here sharpish before the tourists return en masse. So quiet this morning it’s marvellous, not having to deviate around gormless b*ggers on the way to the park for a run.
