I was in a taxi taking my son to his DofE meeting recently and in those curious ways that you are never quite sure how you got there after the fact the conversation somehow got on to refugees. The driver tried to explain how now we have said "all them lot" come here the financial strain will mean it will take Boris longer to fix the problems, which are exclusively Covid and Brexit's fault. Boris has done Brexit but now he can't deal with fixing Britain because of 10,000 refugees apparently. I tried, in the limited time I had to make clear a few points about this being insignificant to any monies that SHOULD be spent but WOULDN'T have been regardless. They have no intention to invest majorly in the working class, they have had 12 years. I said these people were promised this and represented our country more than many born and bred British will ever get near to. If it had any impact, who knows, regardless the anti-foreigner rhetoric is there and conditions are close to being that in which people leap to the extremes politically.Sadly I fear you are right.
I know this is not exactly 'rivers of blood', but, big issues start with small myths. More and more of the electorate are tribal and significant portions are becoming fanaticised to a degree, look at Qanon and Trumpists, which have a global reach now if you look at Australia and its impact there as an example. Many staunch Brexiteers here also happily spew lies and misrepresented information to "own the left" or in real terms, power at any cost. This could definitely be a reality here and it's bloody frightening.
