Great lyrics of our time

Some of my favourites.

‘Sleeping is giving in,
No matter what the time is,
Sleeping is giving in,
So lift those heavy eyelids’

‘I switched my motto,
Instead of saying ‘**** tomorrow’,
The buck that bought a bottle,
Coulda struck the lotto’

‘Just when things are getting complicated in the eye of the storm,
She flicks a red-hot revelation off the tip of her tongue,
It does a dozen somersaults and leaves you supercharged,
Makes me wanna blow the candles out
Just to see if you glow in the dark’

  • The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks

Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road

Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken

There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
    So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win
'So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore'

Love that line.

There is no rehearsal
No second chance
No false start
No better circumstance

This is not a story, this is not a book this is your life
And, this is not a play, some TV you've seen
This is real life

Banderas - This is your life.

From the much underrated Steve Forbert:

You've traveled so far
The wind in your face
You're thinking you've found
The one special place
Where all your dreams
Will walk out in line
And follow the course
You've made in your mind

Hey, it isn't gonna be that way
It isn't gonna be, that way

I came on my own
And felt much like you
I thought I was king
And knew what to do
But everything burned
And fell from my hand
I had to turn back
Or build a new plan

‘Cause it isn't gonna be that way
It isn't gonna be, that way

If I were a god
I'd give you a clue
This minute would crack
And I could go through
And walk out in time
Where no one has been
I'd come back to you
And tell what I'd seen

Oh, but it isn't gonna be that way
It isn't gonna be, that way

You'll just have to live
And see what you find
And take it from there
And follow the signs

Yeah, you think you can live
And dream your own fate
You think you can wish
And walk through the gate

Oh, it isn't gonna be that way
It isn't gonna be that way

Well we know where we’re going
But we don’t know where we’ve been
And we know what we are knowing
But we can’t say what we’ve seen

And we’re not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

Were on a road to nowhere
come on inside
Taking that ride to nowhere
I’ll take that ride…….

I have a blue house
With a blue window
Blue is the colour of all that I wear
Blue are the streets
And all the trees are too
I have a girlfriend and she is so blue
Blue are the people here
That walk around
Blue like my corvette its in and outside
Blue are the words I say
And what I think
Blue are the feelings
That live inside me

I'm blue
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
I'm blue

Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di
Da ba dee da ba di

Information is not knowledge
Knowledge is not wisdom
Wisdom is not truth
Truth is not beauty
Beauty is not love
Love is not music
Music is the best!

We're on the march we're Ally's army
We're going to the Argrntine
and we'll really shake them up
when we win the world cup
coz Scotland are the greatest football team

Most Presidents of the United States of America lyrics are great, especially the ones for Feather Pluckn.

But that's totally
But that's totally
Billions of birdies squawkin' outloud
Talkin' in code to clams in the clouds
They send a secret message, they send it by worm
So vibratin' spiders will receive the word
But that's totally feather pluckn' insane
Ten million monkeys all pick up guitars
But nobody taught them how
Five thousand fishies rockin' really, really, really hard
Nobody taught them how
Check out Chickey, drivin' Piggy's little blue car
Nobody taught him how
Well, flies like to fly 'cuz they don't like to stay
They buzzin' in the ears of the chicken all day
Chicken understand and he pick out the code
Send a subsonic signal through the snot in
The middle of an elephant's long, wet, cold, grey nose
But that's totally feather pluckn insane
Ten million monkeys all pick up guitars
Nobody taught them how
Five thousand froggies rockin' really, really, really hard
Nobody taught them how
Check out Chickey, drivin' Piggy's little blue car
Nobody taught him how
Oh yeah, oh yeah, said oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Everybody supernova
Everybody supernova
Everybody supernova
Everybody supernova

When we reach the Argentine we're really gonna show
The world a brand of football that they could never know
We're representing Britain; we've got to do or die
For England cannae dae it 'cause they didnae qualify!

Youuuuuuuu were under the impression - That when you were walking forwards - You'd end up further onward - But things ain't quite that simple

Not read the whole thread yet but my favourite opening lines to a song are probably "The bugg*r in the short sleeves f*cked my wife/Did it quick and then split" in John Cale's Fear. It's the detail of the short sleeves that gets me. Like he's more annoyed that his wife shagged a bloke with bad fashion sense then he is about the shagging itself. Either that or the first lines of Mclusky's Gareth Brown Said. "All of your friends are c*nts/ Your mother is a ballpoint pen thief" I wish that I'd written that song:
