Best, Cruyff, Maradona and now Pele (who most people only saw properly in one tournament) have now all passed. Di Stefano, Puskas, Ugo Ehiogo all sadly passed on.

I think Messi is now widely accepted as the greatest LIVING footballer, so let’s forget about him for a second.

Beckenbauer (not that I saw him live)

Mbappe
Ibrahimovic
Gullit

I’ve probably forgotten loads of obvious ones and I haven’t even checked if Garrincha is dead (assume he is or he is old as fook). I’m also pretty heavy on strikers.

Let’s not have any daft suggestions about Juninho or “Emerson on his day” please 😂.

Great shout, yes I’d stick him in ahead of Gullit probably. Forgot about him there.

Mbappe is obviously a bit “early” but I really think there’ll be no question whatsoever within the next 2-3 years.

I think we are quite short of players beyond Messi.

The list above is full of great players but not ‘special’ players who you would make a real effort to see, perhaps because of modern coaching and tactics discouraging individualism.

Ha. It’s just an easy way to distinguish the two Ronaldos.

I’m less keen on the term “Fat Ronaldo”, even though he very clearly is quite fat now.
 
I considered Hagi. And whilst he was very good, he actually won nowt at the highest level.

With Xavi, I just felt Iniesta was the better of the two, and I thought it would be boring to have both. I mean do you need to have Biscuits as well?? Can’t just have the entire Barca midfield.
