Greenwood and Silvera

Between the two of them they have played 75 games this season which I find staggering. Their goals aside they have offered nothing and in many instances they have been passengers. On some occasions id go so far as saying they have been liabilities. Silvera must have lost the ball 7 or 8 times today due to being weak in possession. Id say in 75% of their appearances they have given constant 4 out of 10 performances and i'm being very generous. Injuries aside I cannot get my head around why they both constantly appear. If we had two very average 6 out of 10 players who had played the same amount of games in place of them , I think we would see a much stronger team. Although nothing is guaranteed I'd go so far as saying that would equal a few more points than we have .

Go on say it ..... "But But ........what about their goals againt Leiceister "

I'd rather have Greenwood than Silvera. Yet I imagine on complete opposite ends of the transfer fee and wages scale.

I'd still not be against signing Greenwood for the reputed 1.5mil. You'd pay that for a 22 year old from league one. He gets a lot of stick. We've had far worse players who cost multi millions.

That said its clearly an area that needs addressing this summer. Engel is simply hungout to dry at times. You look at Jones or Forss on the right and they offer some kind of defensive cover. Absolutely nothing down the left (probably why Giles was constantly exposed).

Greenwood has the 3rd most goal contributions in the team after Lathe and Jones... and he's only 21.
I don't really understand the benefit of thread after thread saying the same negatives.
Greenwood has played 38 games, which is more than any other Boro player other than Engel and Howson who have played 40 games. Its a law of averages if he constantly plays in a forward position that statistically he will score and assist. I remember a beach ball once getting an assist/goal in a Sunderland match.

Dana Malt is saying it again as I type " Greenwood and Silvera are below the quality we need , right now they are not good enough "

And now Maddo jumps to his defence " Silvera hasnt had the game time " . Really? Only 3 players have played in more games this season.

Yep, if you are looking at challenging for promotion, Silvera and Greenwood (at this moment in time) are not good enough.

Isiah Jones has played 200 more minutes than Greenwood and only has 1 more goal contribution. Does the same argument apply? or is it just a jump on the bandwagon thing?

Sometimes it takes time to develop players.

When you bring in young players - sometimes they take time to become the players you need. You look to develop them over a longer period of time.

Both these players have shown flashes.

Silvera was superb as a false 9 home against West Brom. Even today he only got the ball in space a couple of times and one of those he drove towards the box and perfectly laid on Lath.

I think we should be looking to improve in the area behind the striker - but some of that should be internal development.

Why is it staggering? McGree, Forss, Coburn, Lath and Crooks when he was here have all had long periods out. And Rogers was sold. Who else wouldve played?

Silvera is good when he has clear space to run into, but really lacks when he has to link up play, he struggles in tight situations and unusually gives it away.

Greenwood could grow into it, but he needs to learn the role he's being asked to play. You don't need to be crunching into tackles, but you can take up positions that block off attacks from the opposition. He's got talent, but his overall game is that of a relatively inexperienced lad at times. I think his petulance stems from him being caught out of position a lot of the time too.

When someone who works as a pundit on what is a very biased local radio station have the guts to say " They are not good enough " ( they have said it twice in the last 2 matches ) , we all really should listen and take note . Its something I never thought I would hear, for obvious reasons. As I said midweek there was only one other pundit who I ever recall being so direct and blunt and that was Malcolm Allison over 30 years ago. Bernie Slaven was never even that direct.

I'll be honest because of injuries Silvera has played more than expected.

If he stays I think he will improve a bit and be worthy of a spot on the bench.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but in reality it's only Carrick and the coaching teams opinion that really matters... And injuries aside, Greenwood has been consistently picked ahead of other players in the position.

They don't pick him week after week to annoy fans who think he's rubbish. They do it because they think he deserves his place.

Silvera is probably 3rd choice in a number of attacking positions but has played more than expected due to injuries. Think he'll be loaned next season.

Whether we sign Greenwood or not will depend on the kitty in the summer. He probably wouldn't be my first choice but is a value pick who can play multiple positions.

They’re not ok for t he bench because it only takes an injury or two and they’re starting just like has happened, neither are good enough for where we want to be, when either play they are generally the worst player on the pitch. We’re stuck with silvera and need to get him out of the squad next season but there are far better options to spend £1.5m and £15k/wk on than greenwood.

Not saying that either of these players will get to this level, but Hamer didn't pull up any trees first season at Cov. Last year I thought he was the best player in the division (even better than Gyokores). Both Greenwood and Silvera have, due to injuries, played far more than would have been expected and I imagine far more than Carrick would have liked. But both have potential. Agree that Silvera could benefit from a League One loan next year. Greenwood is good enough to remain in the squad if we can afford his wages.
