such a complete change in form in the same calendar year.. I mean from very, very good to the very, very bad? It seems quite remarkable. Nothing like the Boro!

Has there ever been such a mass hypnosis of a fam base to convince them that their team started so fantastically.. when they didn’t. Players that only joined in January had infact been playing all season and had made a much larger impact than they had gone in reality. Chuba Akpom was still not flavour of the month.. fans were probably still moaning about missing out on Strand Larson and perhaps even thinking that Wilder should have been supported with his wish to bring in Dwight Gayle on £50k a week.
Akpom was not there yet.. after two or three seasons. Latte Laff has scored where Akpom had not. Giles was still suspect defensively and folks were not convinced by him what so ever.. Bangura has had 69 minutes in for us.
We do have a problem at right back.. I’m guessing Carrick thinks Smith and Dijksteel will be back soon.. maybe Clarke is further on than we think too?

We were pretty much the same last season.. why is everyone pretending like we had Archer and Ramsey and that everyone loved Giles and Akpom.. we were dreadful.

If it was the same team, then your question would be worth asking, but it's not the same team or quality.
You cannot compare the two teams, ones a sports car, the other is a three wheeled van.

It was similar but wasn't quite as extreme. We were better under Carrick at the beginning if 2023 than we were at the beginning of 2022 under Wilder. And we are also much worse at the beginning of this season than we were at rhe beginning of last season.
But we didn't lose as many players so it's understandable. Tavernier of course was a big loss but losing Akpom, Archer, Ramsey and Giles is clearly going to have a much bigger impact.
The answer to the OP is I've never seen such a rapid decline in form. It really is mental but it was also very predictable given the transfer window.
The season we sold Cattermole, Boateng and Rochembach and replaced them with Digard, we had a pretty dramatic downturn but it was nothing on this.

I think this season is more worrying.
At this point last year it was easier to blame the tactics and therefore the manager. The goals we were conceding were longballs over our 1 man defence while the CBs were in the other teams box.
This year we've got players back and teams still find it easy to just walk through us.

Thank-you Newy. Where I had no hope for the rest of this season you have provided a glimmer.
Akpom had scored twice in just under half the game time, and Mowatt wasn't injured at any point last season, he'd started the previous 4 games at this point.
Engel came in to replace Giles and he's played 315 minutes, we signed Bangura on deadline day, two weeks after that.
But apart for that...

Akpom scored in game 12 last season.. He joined in on 19 September 2020 in the two years previous he had scored 5 league goals.
Engel came in to replace Bola.. which is whey he came in first.. 21st June Bangura was to replace Giles who we were still trying to bring in.
Luton signed Giles 28th July and Boro signed Bangura 1st September
But apart from that..

Akpom scored twice in game 3 against Sheffield United...
Coulson replaced Bola.
Engel replaced Giles on the 15th of August.
Bangura has now replaced Coulson, and could well take Engel's spot.

Absolutely no point in saying "we started badly last year, too" as some sort of comforter about this seasons dreadful start.
Last season, the remedy was to bring in Carrick and his system to replace the old one. We can't do that now as carrick is here and under him we are performing very poorly.

I would actually argue Bangura was sogned to replace Engel. I think Engel was signed as a first choice LB. We signed Bangura because we quickly realised Engel wasn't good enough.
