Hayden Hackney's attitude

Don’t think I’ve heard anything about a bad attitude at all quite the opposite when you listen to Carrick.

He made a mistake out on loan where he spat at an opposition player. Something he will regret and has learned from clearly. It’s behind him now, we move on.

That might be it then.

He’s been fantastic for us this season for sure 👍

I was slightly apprehensive about him ever making something of himself here purely because of that incident and did comment about it at the time. We've seen young players do stupid stuff like that and worse in the past and then never get a chance.

Looks like he's put it behind him which he can only be praised for.

I seem to remember folks wanting rid of him after the spitting incident while on loan at Scunthorpe.. the usual over the top reaction. I doubt that many knew the circumstances.

Yeah me too, he was young though and he looks to have learned from it and under the stewardship of Carrick he will only get better too. Glad it’s all coming good for him

Just a bit odd the spitting incident. Seems completely out of character with what we're seeing now. But people grow up I suppose. Can be a big difference between an 18 year old and 20 year old.

They way he conducts himself on the pitch now you'd think he'd be one of the last players to get involved in anything like that.

I had forgotten about that nonsense. Young players (occasionally) do stupid things, it's how they react and change subsequently that defines them and their careers. Let's be honest, he has been nothing short of exemplary this season. Typified for me in his performance in place of Ramsey on Friday night. Those of us "know nowts" (raises hand) who thought he was the wrong choice to take Aaron's place were effectively silenced within minutes as he slotted in seamlessly. It did raise the question of whether he could play further forward than he does?

Oh and his goal was a thing of beauty. Lovely controlled finish.

I've met him a few times and he appears very humble and appreciative of what he has achieved and where he has come from.
He turned up at our under 11's football presentation and talked about his life and career and even had time to be schooled by one of the kids on FIFA.
I've also stayed in the team hotel with him, pre-match, on a couple of occasions and again he took the time to engage and talk to me and he seemed to get on very well with the rest of the squad.

I am not saying he is whiter than white, we have all done idiotic things growing up, but he seemed very genuine to me.

I think he has a bright future ahead of him.

Lots of love..
His Dad*

Yep, it's easy to make mistakes at that age but it's about how you conduct yourself going forward that matters.

Look at Diouf for example when he was charged with spitting in 2004, and then had another incident against us a year later... and he was what, 24/25? Never seemed to move past that and almost made it his personality.

Interesting reading the comments at the time (and the posters they were from).

It's to his credit that he has completely won over the fans.

Reading that recent article on him he mentions about the loan being frustrating because he didn't like losing matches, plus being kicked all over by physically bigger players. Big contrast with now, higher level, winning regularly, a lot easier to play with a smile on his face. I'm sure he learned a lot about himself during that time.

Its funny isnt how people make mistakes and if they aren't a key player people/teams are willing to throw them to the lions but if they are good players there is always that second chance. Happens alot in football.

see derby car crash, mendy, partey... im not saying any of these are as bad as spitting at someone but the same principles apply.

also how diouf spitting at someone is looked at compared to hackney in the eyes of our fans.

He's proved me wrong.
Spitting at other people is disgusting and I wasnt at all impressed but it looks like it was a one off, pressure situation added to a growing up quickly situation that has thankfully passed.

The comparison I made with Diouf is that he never really learned from or got over the first spitting incident, in fact he repeated it just a year later and then throughout his career just acted unprofessional whenever things got heated.

It looks like the complete opposite with Hackney, you would never associate the player he is now with what happened just last year.

Good interview with him here.
Good read that, mad to think 8 years later Howson and a Boro fan from the crowd that day could be the midfield pairing that brings Boro Wembley success. Let’s hope so
