Don’t think I’ve heard anything about a bad attitude at all quite the opposite when you listen to Carrick.
He made a mistake out on loan where he spat at an opposition player. Something he will regret and has learned from clearly. It’s behind him now, we move on.
Yeah me too, he was young though and he looks to have learned from it and under the stewardship of Carrick he will only get better too. Glad it’s all coming good for himI was slightly apprehensive about him ever making something of himself here purely because of that incident and did comment about it at the time. We've seen young players do stupid stuff like that and worse in the past and then never get a chance.
Looks like he's put it behind him which he can only be praised for.
Just a bit odd the spitting incident. Seems completely out of character with what we're seeing now. But people grow up I suppose. Can be a big difference between an 18 year old and 20 year old.
They way he conducts himself on the pitch now you'd think he'd be one of the last players to get involved in anything like that.
Interesting reading the comments at the time (and the posters they were from).Yep, it's easy to make mistakes at that age but it's about how you conduct yourself going forward that matters.
Look at Diouf for example when he was charged with spitting in 2004, and then had another incident against us a year later... and he was what, 24/25? Never seemed to move past that and almost made it his personality.
Thread here from at the time: https://fmttmboro.com/index.php?threads/hayden-hackney-banned-for-6-games.27508/page-2
He's proved me wrong.I seem to remember folks wanting rid of him after the spitting incident while on loan at Scunthorpe.. the usual over the top reaction. I doubt that many knew the circumstances.
The comparison I made with Diouf is that he never really learned from or got over the first spitting incident, in fact he repeated it just a year later and then throughout his career just acted unprofessional whenever things got heated.also how diouf spitting at someone is looked at compared to hackney in the eyes of our fans.
Good read that, mad to think 8 years later Howson and a Boro fan from the crowd that day could be the midfield pairing that brings Boro Wembley success. Let’s hope soHayden Hackney still remembers 2015 Boro Wembley pain and wants to 'put it right'

Good interview with him here.
