Home alarm system

Surely though you want the burglars to know you have a camera as that is the potential deterrent?

You could capture them on camera stealing all your stuff but even if police had the video they are not going to put any work into identifying who it was or getting your stuff back, you'll still just get a ref number for your insurance claim.

Alarms and cameras just seem a bit pointless to me unless you want the camera to check on your pets or something.
Yep, we have cameras inside and outside the house and they're there as a deterrent but also invaluable for checking on pets, dealing with couriers / deliveries and as they have facial recognition we know who has been. Also useful for finding out why out front gate kept being left open and we discovered our neighbours kid jumping over it every night at 2am. If someone did actually break in unless they are thick as mince I doubt the footage would be any good

You can get anything in full hd 1080p, it won't help the night vision quality. Full size cameras struggle with it alert from a few, anything that size has no chance

Below image taken from a review of one that is the size of a GoPro so anything hidden in a pen or smoke alarm will be worse due to smaller sensor size so less scope for night vision improvements

Probably fine if they put the lights on full for you though.

Use a camera with built-in infrared for night vision.

these hidden cameras in almost anything look a bit sinister is there really any need, did you get them off the dark web

That screen shot is taken using infra red

Using infrared generally reduces frame rate and quality and it won't be the best quality to start with, you will usually get a lot of motion blur and unless they're using night vision goggles themselves any light sources they use will decimate any image anyway as it will blow it out

Hidden cameras - just why?

I have excellent highly visible 4k cameras set up externally, with 50m IR out front providing free protection for front of neighouring houses also (with their consent), rear garden cams have white light LED's to keep colour image at night and also warn unwelcome visitors of their presence.

Cameras are of the same standard as public space cameras fitted by the council. Not hugely expensive.

These days we rarely get the unwelcome visitors skulking down the cul-de-sac in the early hours. No burglaries in the road since I fitted them.🤞

The first line of defence is your bell box of your alarm system, get one that has a couple of lights that are flashing, that will deter most have a go burglars, if you are going to use outside cameras, stick them under a motion activated light or buy the ones that have the light built in, first thing the burglar does when the light comes on is spots the camera and wanders off, motion sensors outside your house that set off a yappy dog sound inside the house are a good idea too.
these are only good to deter opportunists, if you have some very expensive items in your property that a thief knows about, your door or window is going in, and the thief is in and out of your property in a few minutes.
