How does the average family afford to visit London?

I worked in London on off during the 90's and stayed with the brother in law in South Kensington (Onslow Square), which is a nice part of London. I made a lot of good friends whilst working down there, mainly other lads & lasses traveling for work but if I am being honest, I am not a lover of the place. Great for a long weekend but no more than that.

London, like most capital cities, is a must see place to visit and the attractions available to both families and adults are second to none. You can make it as cheap or as expensive as you want and I would call anyone who hasn’t enjoyed their experience visiting London as a miserable git or the loser of a cup final - we all know to well how that feels.

The last time I was in London was to watch our Charlie play in the pizza cup final and was with my youngest son. He ended up night clubbing with his cousins until the early hours and I went back to the flat.

We still have family in South Kensington but can’t see me visiting London again other than for the Chelsea Flower Show. I don’t think it will be this year.

I have said that I will never go to Wembley again even to watch the Boro but never is a long time.

There is also the chance you could bump into smalltown and he would bore you sh1tless about Brexit and how he’s sorry he voted for Johnson. 🤣

Just pulling your stump smalltown. 😜

I’m not sure it always seems expensive coming from london to boro- cheapest I could get this weekend was £166 and that was no change tickets ie if you don’t: can’t get the exact train you lose your money. For the banter I looked at an open return first class and it was about five hundred quid!!
Isn't there return flights with British Airways for about £136!

Posters on here have quoted from £35 to £161 for the same return 500 mile journey. A major problem is how variable the prices are. My guess is that around 50% of tickets are also sold on discounts, but posters are not quoting this in most cases.

Not London but Great Ayton to Whitby is £5.30 return (senior/young persons railcard) with free car parking at G/A station. Very pretty journey and station is in the middle of the town.

Its £2.50 for Whitby park and ride and at least £6 fuel.

I took my daughter a couple of years back to go to winter wonderland. managed to do it reasonably cheap. return train from cornwall and an air b and b at maida vale. probably only a few hundred quid which for a couple of nights in london is pretty decent.

What is annoying is they make it so much more expensive to have any form of flexibility in the ticket - knowing taht that is what people want.

Why is there a London wage and a rest of the country wage? How big is the catchment area for this London wage?

In the last few months I’ve booked / had trips to Amsterdam, Rome and Paris for less than it would cost me to go to London for the same duration. It’s baffling. I’d rather go abroad anyway so not complaining but the whole things is just stupid.

I guess you're talking costs to get there. At least one of those cities you mention is more expensive when you're there

As said before, if you don't book in advance it can cost a fortune. If you have the good fortune to be able to book early and are flexible you can get bargains - I'm going to (or through) London in July and August and got advance first class return for less than £100 each.

Agreed, I'd much rather go abroad.

Amsterdam is a beautiful city too. Really enjoyed my weekend there a few years ago.
