How long is a life sentence?

The judge will give you a tariff. Usually 10 to 20 odd years depending on what you've done. The life part of it refers to your licence. So you serve the tariff then after that if the parole board says you can be released out you go. You just stay on your licence for the rest of your life meaning you can be recalled back to jail if you break your licence terms.

I think that's right. Used to be part of my job 10 years ago and I was an expert on sentencing. Pretty much forgotten how it works. Needlessly complicated.
