I assume there needs to be a 'significant' gap rather than a follow-up which happens often

That's actually a really surprising stat to me.
He's "only" 35, though I guess players used to retire earlier back in the day.

Over the course of the 2023 season, Howson has easily been our most consistent if not our best player.

Yet we've been saying 'give him another year for 3 years on one year deals. He never misses a match and plays for 90min almost weekly. His standards and consistency has never dropped.
We've been trying to find a longterm replacement for years. Yet still ain't got near to bringing in anyone 'as good' or better.
I'd give him a year even if we got promoted. He'd be worth having around for his experience even if only featuring off the bench. That said chances are he'd still play 40 games and be Boro's best CM

You can extend that to 'Over the last few seasons' really. Only Akpom's exceptional season last year eclipsed him.
