If Boro were to spend £10m in January...

If we had 10m to spend in Jan (unlikely) how would you split it with regards to our needs?

No names - just perm or loan - which positions?

I'd be looking at a starting quality DM that can also pass. 4m - long term option to start alongside Hackney

Starting quality young right back - challenge Dijksteel this season with a view to being number one choice next year. 3m

Another striker to challenge/rotate alongside Coburn and Lath. (Ideally could also play 10/wing in our system). 3m

I trust most of our players - only want to add long term options

Permanently sign a right back, sign or loan a striker, loan a wide player or two, maybe a centre midfielder.

If your looking at ' long term ' more than eighteen months to two years , it'd be a replacement for hackney, not alongside..
.... O'Brien fits ...

I would put it all on the last piece of the jigsaw.. that missing striker.

ST Brandon Vazquez £8.7m
I’d bring in Dexter Lembikisa on loan from Wolves to cover for Tommy Smith.. he was unreal for Rotherham.. he would absolutely fly in Carrick’s team.

Joe Worrall in on loan from Nottingham Forest with a view to buy.. essential cover for Darragh Lenihan and brings back some much needed leadership.

Probably send Bryant Bilongo out on loan to make room… oh.. and Matthew Hoppe too

I'd treat it like Hackney is here - I think it is unlikely he leaves this summer - we can probably keep hold if we get promoted next season...

This is why I wanted to ask the question - I really think centre mid is the priority (despite liking Barlaser and Howson - think they are great squad players, but we will struggle to be promoted with them starting every game).

I think Lath and Coburn could be good enough long term - so I would take a flyer on a cheap young flyer.

When is Lewis Obrien due back from injury though?

Hackney back in a matter of weeks I think

A striker who can play with hs back to goal

People sying bring in centre backs when we already have too many (when fit) beguiles me, especially players from the champo who can't cut the mustard in the prem, i.e
basically what we already have

Hackney is back soon.. then hopefully O’Brien.

Lath is class Coburn is quality.. but 2 is not enough imo

Lath could play that 10 role like Akpom did last season.. maybe

I disagree. Now Barlaser has settled in, I think midfield is the area we're strong in again. At first they were too passive when they played together but now I think that balance has been struck. Barlaser's tendency to hang back also allows Howson forward more, where he can be effective. I'll be glad to have Hackney back but a little sad one has to drop out. Plus we have O'Brien to come back.
It's great to have Coburn back but we need a seasoned striker or a red-hot youth prospect such as those we had last season. Lath for me is busy but too profligate and doesn't hold the ball up that well. He's a bench player. Assuming McGree stays fit, we have Rodgers, Silvera, Crooks and Jones to fill the other two places behind the striker, which I think is a decent range of options. Personally, I don't care for Greenwood as a player, so I'm not counting him. I'd like us to sign a No 10 type player who can make things happen, a Benrahma, Chaplin type, but those players are hard to find; mind you, so is a good striker.
We probably need a right-back, especially now Dijksteel looks like he's injured, but that shouldn't take 10 million!

Sign proven forward ability. either someone from a top league abroad or a Prem striker buy or loan. A Danny Ings type. Remember when we got Nugent, Uwe Fuchs - both times we went up...

If we can get quality loans from the prem that have already shone in this division I would go that way.
If we are spending money it's got to be a full back a striker. I would be happy to see us go for Sorba Thomas at Huddersfield. Seen him play a few times recently and he shines in a poor team. 24 and 6ft 1 , he's a strong player with good skills. Does he fit the model ?

He'd be a no nonsense bid at 3 million at this level IMHO

I think the model relies on us selling players at a profit and finding the next one, if players hit it big they will have to find the continuation of that wheel otherwise we aren't doing anything different to before

Exactly that , so a " long term plan" including hackney is delusional.
He's worth 20 million plus inside a year in current trajectory.
We can't keep him at that value .

Weirdly you'd be better planning for barlaser than him for a 3 year period.
As much as I think he's a solid champ player , he's not gonna fetch 6 million plus ever .
Or splash on O'Brien.
