If you had to the chance to pick a trade to retrain in...

I wish I'd taken the sage advice that if you do something you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life

Actually in the process of changing careers right now, probably not the best time, but when is? Not a major change but shifting industry after 20 years and changing roles

If I could go back I'd do forensics I think, maybe forensic archeology

I changed my career last year at the age of 55. Chucked in a career as an analyst and opened up a kitchen refurbishment franchise.
Omg do I regret it, the stress of opening up a new business during a pandemic is horrific.
When reviewing my options, I wish I had become a stripper, nothing to look at but I do enjoy removing paint :)

I know your pain, I quit working for my previous company at the start of the year to take some time off with my newborn and launch my own consultancy later in the year. Then Covid happened. My only saving grace is I’m in digital so there’s still demand for my services, though every pitch has an extra layer of anxiety to it

Yeah bug surely the issue is the pandemic as opposed to the career choice?

What made you want to change? Which franchise did you go with?

Chris, to be fair is a bit of both the pandemic and the master franchisor that is a problem, I don't get the support I thought I would get, although we are all in a difficult situation.
I reached an age when my kids were grown up and self sufficient, I didn't enjoy my job anymore and so I thought I would do something different before I retire. So I packed my bags moved to North Devon and set up business. The franchise is called Dream Doors, which to be fair is a very good product and there are a lot of very good businesses in the network.

i'm a bit taken aback with this thread.

options on what to do and how to live a life, and people are going for construction, bean counters or train drivers (wont be any of those by 2030) - wheres the dreams?

does no one want to be an archaeologist, or a playwright, marine biologist, actor, film maker, artist, musician, designer, physician, surgeon, architect, ecologists, etc etc etc, or even a politician ? . :giggle:

Interestingly I do 3 of these and would still rather be a day trader

Not sure. Am doing what I've always wanted to do, so haven't really thought about it. I always fancied driving one of those little dust carts around the streets that sweep the curbs. Out all day listening to the radio, not having to deal with people so much.

or one of those sit on lawnmowers, driving one of those would be good.
In the week I retired ,age 56 ,from financial advice, I was offered a job , sitting on a lawn mower doing lawns in North Yorkshire, as far as I know the jobs still open!

Doctor or dentist..... or a professional sports person. (Was almost certainly never good enough (sportswise), but regret not having the focus/commitment of kids that ultimately make it) - That said, my parents weren't in to sport... and those 'pushy' sports parents must be a bit of a nightmare!!

I'm actually reasonably happy with my career choice and have no regrets about it.

One thing I think I could have done though, which may have been achievable, is sports commentary. I used to commentate on matches as a kid and record myself, then listen back to them. I should probably have done a sports journalism degree and pursued it, knowing what I know now.

I have a stressful job and I my position might be made redundant. If I get paid off I might retrain rather than look at a job in the same industry.

I want a job that has reduced stress, when I finish at 5pm no more paperwork and a decent level of pay.

I have thought about nursing, mental health nursing and radiography as £7000 tax free bursaries are being offered per year plus a student loan and courses starting in January at Teesside

looked at h g v driving.

also got at least 8 weeks off so I was looking at short courses to tick me over if I do retain such as being a make hairstylist. Not one local college does a short 6 week basics course.

has anyone retained mid life?

I also applied for the northern rail train drivers job that was withdrawn
