Is Daphne’s brother in Frasier the worst…

… character ever to appear in a sitcom? I leisurely rewatch Frasier all through from episode one, probably on a loop, over the years and each time you get to the spell where this Simon character pops up you’re reminded of how absolutely appalling he is. There will be lots of other contenders I’m sure, but he is particularly bad. Even worse than Miranda Hart’s character in Miranda.

Apparently the English characters are all ironically bad in terms of accent, with them all being wildly different despite being related and from the same place.

Though I suspect it's just that they didn't care enough to get a Manchester accent right and tried to make a joke of it after the fact.

Makes d*ck Van Dyke's cockernee accent seem accurate. Just terrible I don't know why they didn't just let him speak in an American accent "because he had been there for so long". Worth finding a clip to hear how bad he is, he can't act either.

Didn’t that Simon bloke in Frasier have a mockney accent rather than a Manchester one?The actor who played him was an Aussie.

In terms of worst character in a sitcom surely the fact that he is supposed to be obnoxious and annoying means he is doing his job well? If you want really bad character then look no further than Ross Geller after Series 5. Unwatchable.

I think Daphne, or Jane Leeves, got a bit of a free pass for her terrible Manchester accent because she was very good in the show and a good character. Her brother is just awful. I did always wonder how she could think that accent would pass muster but she got away with it.

Yes, and he was an A-League goalkeeper in Australia in the 1980s as well apparently. Daphne’s brother, I mean. Not Ross.

I quite like Ross's character in later series (in fact he's a bit of a drip in the first couple) 😂

Has quite a few really funny moments..... Unwatchable? Wow, bold statement.

Mark in parks and recreation would be a shout. Not helped by clearly being written as a straight man for the others to play off, but he offered nothing and was wisely written out. Not sure he was involved in any funny moments at all.

Also Gina (Chelsea Perretti) in brooklyn 99. Just annoying.

Couldn't disagree with you more. I’m not alone I’m sure. He became unbelievably annoying not least because he seemed to change personality from a decent funny bloke in the first few seasons of the series to completely annoying twonk in the second half of the series.

I'm sure you're not alone.

I'm sure I'm not either.

Funny thing about opinions that. I found him whiny in the first few, (and plenty did) .

You liked him, fair enough. Be boring if all thought the same 👍

I thought the same for all the Friends characters tbh. I thought there were some good episodes in the first 2-3 seasons and then it started to become a bit annoying. When did they come and film in London? Series 5? That’s when it completely ended for me. Some of the stuff they were putting out after that was terrible, and really very far removed from how it started out. IMO of course.

Hard for any sitcom to maintain standards for that long.

Generally becomes a question of how far they fall. Friends was still funny, but I think it lost its way a bit with the storytelling.

Frasier is quite a rare beast in that it's pretty consistent throughout.

Roland in Schitt's Creek.

I absolutely cannot stand him.

You're not meant to like him, but I just don't enjoy any of the scenes he's in and I really like the programme.

Agree with that.

Another couple of rare beasts - Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. CYE is ridiculously high quality throughout, even the most recent episodes are excellent. The fear was that they’d spoils the rest of it but it was the opposite.

There's this mad orange fella with big hair in one of the big American sitcoms, absolutely mental and so unbelievably obnoxious it's completely unrealistic, he could never exist in the real world.
I can never find the name of the program though?🤔

I remember at the time thinking they should be bold and give an acting break to Liam Gallagher as the ne-er do well brother.
And if Daphne had a sister, Melanie Sykes please.
