Isn't this a kind of match fixing?

You'd need to see the highlights to see how much it's been exaggerated, but on the face of it, it doesn't look good.

It's missing context though. It appears as though he had an ongoing rapport with Wright and there was obviously some reason he wasn't giving the 'fouls'.

I'm guessing Wright was going down like a sack-of-shyte and the ref decided to give the opposition the benefit of the doubt. Wright was a dirty, cynical, cheating (for the era) footballer.

Standard after dinner speaking b***ks I’d imagine.
Yeah, very much so.

"Free rein" is one of my pet peeves. It feels like it should be "reign" because that sort of makes sense, but it isn't. Nobody ever gets it right.
I think that’s being generous. “Free reign” makes no sense at all. It’s like “damp squid” or “a mute point”. You only have to engage your brain for five seconds to realise they’re nonsense. And you have to make quite an effort to get them wrong. AutoCorrect tried to correct all three of the ones I’ve written.

Edit: and indeed has corrected the one in the bit of text that’s quoted, which I didn’t spot to change. I’ve left it because it kind of proves the point.
