James Trafford

Linked with a 15 mil perm move to Burnley. So can't see it.

I'd say 15mil was ridiculous. Yet sold Bazunu to Southampton for similar after a good season in league 1 at pompey.

They can clearly produce a decent young keeper (although will never play for them).

I think it would be very strange not to make a signing which improves a position we need, in fear of sending the wrong message to an academy player who isn't good enough to fill that position...
I don't entirely disagree with you but I don't think signing an unproven 20 year old on loan to be No.1 instead of giving Sol Brynn a chance sends the right message to any academy player. I'm all for us signing an experienced goalkeeper to be No.1 ahead of Brynn. But can't see the merits in signing Trafford as No. 1

I think it's a case of homegrown sentiment over ability. I would love to see any Boro-born player in our first team, but we might have to accept that Brynn's just not good enough.

James Trafford was playing in L1 at 19 - he had a great season last year.
Gavin Bazunu was playing in L1 at 19 and playing in the PL at 20 (Southampton).
Josh Griffith was playing in L1 at 20 and the championship at 21 (West Brom).
Joe Whitworth made his debut in the PL at 19 and is currently Palace's second choice keeper.
The list of GKs younger and better than Brynn is huge.

Illan Meslie is only 6 months older then Brynn and he's played over 100 games for Leeds, making his debut at 20.
Michael Cooper who was in the L1 team of the season is 23, only 1 year older than Brynn, made his L1 debut at 18 and he's played 150 games for Plymouth.

Brynn will be 23 in October and he's still another 2 years off being where we need him to be in my opinion.

I just don't see what you've based your opinion that Brynn is not good enough on. Have you watched him regularly? I haven't and I doubt many Boro fans have.

I think the fact we are being linked with keepers tells you the club don't think he's the answer.

Not yet at least.

I'd agree, I have no idea if he's good enough or not, though to write him off as not good enough without seeing him is a bit strange. I actually want us to sign another keeper by the way.

I don't have an opinion on whether or not Brynn is good enough; that's Leo's job as "head of player pathway and development".

We have Alan Fettis as a GK coach who's a very experienced ex-Man Utd coach; and Mark Bell, who's been our academy GK coach for 9 years+ (seen the development of Steele and Pears).

These guys, along with Leo (a former GK) will have had a conversation with Wilder when Brynn was loaned out, and the decision was to send him to league 2 (not league 1), and bring someone else in.

These guys will have also had a conversation with Carrick about GK options when Steffan left, and now we're potentially looking at a 20 year old James Trafford.

Nothing against Brynn, I hope he's a success... but all the signs point to him not being good enough to play for Boro as things stand.

Watching him play for U21 now. You can see why there might be interest in him plays the same way as Steffen good with the ball at his feet.

He's had two loans now has he? Last season in league 2?

I think he needs a year in league 1, or better still the championship to see how he performs but at the moment you'd be very surprised to see him as our first choice next season.
