Jamie carragher what a…

I love watching Stick to Football, but find Carragher really quite annoying. His mannerisms always make me think he’s got something to hide.

Looking at the clip I tend to agree with Nano. Completely rubbish attempt at humour from him, that totally failed. I’m sure Abdo quickly dealt with it and moved on. More important things to spend your time on.

That whole show is based around "banter" but the issue is Carra, being the loathsome individual that he is, never really understands where the line is and isn't really suited to that style of programme. Something like this was always going to happen eventually

I think what some TV producers don’t seem to take into consideration is that someone like Carragher is pretty good at one particular thing. I don’t much like him tbh but acknowledge that he is astute at breaking down certain aspects of football matches and analysing them, delivering insight into good or bad defending or team shape.

But just because he’s good at that doesn’t mean he’s a good co-commentator. In fact he’s an absolutely terrible co-commentator. It doesn’t mean he’s a good person to have in the studio for all of the ‘big’ football matches. He is largely quite bad at that too. It doesn’t mean he’s good at ‘banter’ either. Again, he’s pretty bad at that as well.

It’s similar to Gary Neville in some ways. When he first became Sky’s main analyst he was a breath of fresh air. I used to make a point of watching all of MNF when I had access to Sky purely because of him. Then he started popping up here, there and everywhere and it wore a bit thin. I don’t need his opinion on absolutely everything. Then Carragher pitched up at Sky and it’s never really been the same since.

Micah Richards is another. What is he actually bringing aside from a cheery outlook? Him, Neville, Carragher and Keane have got it sewn up between them and it’s akin to watching a boy’s club now, with quite often the terrible ‘banter’ to match.

Anyway, long story short, Carragher really does grate and he should’ve been sacked straight after the spitting incident.

Is he? I watched him with Henry last week on MNF (a rare occasion I had the volume up) and Henry was far more eloquent, insightful and intelligent.

Carragher may have been a top class defender but he's an awful communicator and as for his "banter", I don't think Larry David has much to worry about.

I’m not saying Carragher is as articulate and eloquent as Thierry Henry because it’s clear that he isn’t. I’m saying that I think he’s good at one very particular, specific thing. I think that means numerous TV producers seem to think it’s a given that he’s suitable for all aspects of football broadcasting, which I don’t think he is.

I actually like Carragher. One of a few pundits who knows what he's talking about, got good knowledge of football that isn't just the Premier League.

If they gave the option to just have - real & actual crowd noise - I'd choose that, every time, over pretty much any & all commentators & esp the garbage pundits & ex-pro 'experts' many of whom struggled to regurgitate what just happened, never mind give insight or tactical analysis..

It's why I rarely, if ever, have the sound on when watching live football.

UCL Goals show is an exception but I think they're mainly journalists rather than "pundits" so perhaps that's the key difference in "listenability" :)
