One thing he could improve on as well is his running off the ball, he always sits and waits in a wing backish position too close to our full back to recieve the ball.

He would rather travel with the ball than without it but that gives time for the opposition to get back in position and drop deeper.

You hear some ridiculous things in the stands too. At The Wigan game, I heard a few complaining that he wasn’t taking on players in a 2 v 1 position, sometimes from our own half.

As much as you want him to be positive, you’ve got to play the percentages too. No point taking on high risk dribbles for not much reward.

I made the point about how much Giles gets space on the left hand side on a previous thread too. He’s reaping the rewards of sides having to double up on him. Some fans are just clueless though, it’ll never change.

The analysis above is really good. He is sacrificing himself a bit for the team by pulling their defenders over to him so we can create space elsewehere and then he gets stick for it.

This site is plagued by arrogant posters. Any and every critique is jumped on and immediately dismissed. A defence of Jones as ‘its his second full season’ despite having more than 100 senior appearances. He’s having a poor run of form. It’s obvious for all to see, why try to deflect?

It's pretty likely Carrick has said to him something along the lines of "They're onto you now, they know what you can do. So they're likely to stick two players on you to reduce your effectiveness. That's fine. We can work round that. Should you have your limpets close by when you receive the ball then drag them along to you and pass. There will be spaces left by them doing that and I don't want you trying to go past two AND hit a cross in under pressure as it's more likely another available player, with space to run into and under less pressure will be able to hit a more telling through ball.

Should their marking be off and you DON'T have those two near you then go for it, I have confidence you can do that. But should two players be close by and attempting to block your progress then pass, pass, pass. And we're more likely to make things happen."

Same thing happened to Stuart Ripley and then Stewart Downing, the good players adapt their game and come again. Jones is following the same path.

I realise, however, that some folk wouldn’t accept this as a reason unless they could see what those tactical reasons were themselves, or heard it from Carrick’s own mouth. Sometimes things go on that aren’t so obvious, though.

I don't think people are trying to deflect, it's more about balance and grey areas rather than just labelling people too good for us or rubbish. There's loads of more balanced views in between.

He' s not playing as well as his peak of last season but he's playing a lot steadier than earlier this season where he was culpable for about 6 or 7 goals under Wilder while only creating a handful of chances.

Right now he's defending better (because he's staying on his feet), he's retaining possession better but he's lost a little bit of gambling to beat his man. It's a confidence thing, and will come back.

You say he's got about 100 senior appearances, he hasn't, he's got 85, 12 of them were in the scottish lower leagues, he's started 57 games at this level and most of those as a wingback not a winger. Has been learning on the job playing catch up. They say it's 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill. He didn't get those 25 hours a week of professional youth training for 4 or 5 years before breaking into the first team squad. He's 5,000 hours behind players of his age, despite having 57 starts.

Personally I think he's struggled a bit with receiving the ball higher up the pitch and not having space to run into, he's also being marked much tighter this year.

yep - or sooner rather than later. bit odd for someone to get excited about him being 'dropped' when Carrick has talked about making changes to freshen up the team.
