Really pleased for Jonny
Fully deserved and, before he went on his wonderful run, he was an innings away from being dropped.
The rest, as they say is history.

Matured into a lovely lad too

He was the unbelievable last year.

I was at day 2 of the NZ test match at Headingley last summer. One of the craziest afternoons of Test Cricket I’ve watched - although it’s becoming a more regular occurrence these days. 55-6 to 260+ without any further losses.

Bairstow completely changed the game and Overton got in on the act too.

Hope we see a lot more of that this summer (hopefully not so much of the 55-6 though!).

Start his long recuperation with a game for Yorkshire Seconds this week!
After seeing him in the nets at Leics game last week, I am both very surprised and delighted that it is felt that he will be able to take part in this. He was visibly struggling to make any turns whilst out on the pitch.

My mates son is Jonny’s best friend - probably his only real friend.

Jonny called him the night before and laid his heart on his sleeve telling him he thought this would be his last chance If he didn’t deliver.
They had a long chat and…. Something happened.

You do have to wonder where he is going to bat in the test side though, after the rise of Brook who seems unstoppable.
I imagine Foakes is most under threat. They may look at getting Bairstow in as a wicket Keeper.

Although also Foakes also recognised as having an exceptional summer.

We are blessed with some stunning talent. It's going to be hard to get them all in. That said Foakes is a far superior glove man. Rated by many as one of the best in the world.

It's a shame we don't have the same issues with the opening pair.

He is a perfect example of a positive attitude and the importance of developing mental resilience.

I am so pleased for him. he must be a nightmare to play against. lol

You may have to wonder who has to drop out, but not whether he gets in.
Bairstow, Root and Brooks must play.
Ok, but do you put Bairstow back at 3, or at 7 with the gloves? Pope can drop out if so. Both are positions YJB has struggled with in the past though.

Get Root back as an opener. He played plenty of games there for Yorks in his early career. He certainly has the technique for it as long as he stops the occasional waft outside the off stump when trying to run the ball down to third man.

What an explosive middle order we would have then, Brooks, Bairstow and Stokes.

We need a proper keeper, with every chance needing to be taken and pressure put on their batsmen at all times. Foakes has to play.
Pope drops out for me, but I agree the openers are then the concern.
England need to decide the order of the crucial 3, but get that right and they score enough runs to give our bowlers the chance to skittle the Aussies twice.
Given Stokes can't really bowl anymore, he really does need to perform with the bat this summer.

Crawley should surely be the player who makes way? He's been absolutely woeful time and time again.

May be worth exploring Discos opinion on moving Root up to opener?

Duckett
Root
Pope
Bairstow
Brook
Stokes
Foakes
Robinson/Woakes
Archer
Anderson
Leach/Ahmed

Archer ahead of Wood/Broad?

I don’t think Woakes will play much.

Root as opener or at 3 may solve a few issues but it could be problematic if he isn’t settled there. He has consistently stated his desire to bat at 4 and he has always performed best there.

I don't think the bowlers are overly an issue for the ashes and more so the long cricket season. They will all get a runout (excuse pun) at some point due to conditions/fitness etc.

Anderson and Broad can't play every ashes test. Also Wood and Archer simply won't due to bodies and strain of fast bowling.

Opening is the issue. Then again it is for the vast majority of test sides. I'd say not many world class openers around these days.

The fact Zak has played something like 40 tests is proof of this.

This will probably be the biggest headache for England.

If Stokes isn't able to bowl then they'll need someone else in there as either a bowler or all-rounder.

I reckon this will dictate the selections more than trying to squeeze all the great batters in.
