Joseph Desire Job goal in Auf Wiedersehen Pet

In the final specials in Bangkok, Oz announces it’s all over what they all had, “lads it’s history”.

At that moment, in the background, a group of Thai men are seen celebrating as Job puts the ball in and runs to the Boro fans (its not the Cardiff goal).

I wonder what Frank Roddam was trying to say with this scene?

Does Job get under rated by fans? Never really hear him named in discussions about boro legends yet scored and won penalty in our only cup win in our history. Feels like Maccarone gets far more hero worship for his euro exploits.
That was actually the only game Job started in our entire 2004 League Cup run.

He was obviously hugely influential in that first 7 minutes in Cardiff, but I doubt many would attribute the Cup success to him much beyond that.

Otherwise, he was an ok player with the potential to look very good or very bad, sometimes at the exact same time. Had he scored those two Maccarone goals, though, I've no doubt he'd be revered in the same way. In truth, Boro fans barely give McClaren much credit for what we achieved.

Maccarone is more loved because those two moments were just sublime, even if the rest of his Boro career has been more or less forgotten about (and his performance playing wide right in a 2-1 win at home to Arsenal should never be).

Obviously knew he wasn't a regular starter but didn't realise the final was his only start. That's a bit mad. Or geniuses it turned out lol. Still, many player have been held in higher esteem for a lot less. The cup final and the overhead kick against Lisbon live long in the memory.

Definitely a Boro legend!

Joseph Desire Job was the only goal scorer in the match played in front of the highest ever attendance at the Riverside Stadium!

A brace vs Norwich nearly 20 years ago.

Boro fans, decades from now, will be checking their virtual Glaspers, and seeing that he scored both goals in a couple of minutes before a crowd of over 34,800 on 28 December 2004

Job was a decent player but never really top tier, but he doesn't get as much love as he probably should for his role in that final.

Although bizarrely every time he's mentioned my first thought isn't his goal in the final but some interview he did on MOTD in one of his early games for us where he said something like "I ran my balls off today" (with massive emphasis on the word balls). Seem to remember Lineker making some quip about it when it went back to the studio.

Worth also mentioning the chant “One Job on Teesside”

I remember going to see us play a pre-season friendly at Nottingham Forest, where someone, presumably a relative, had a replica shirt what I vaguely recall had “2 Jobs on Teesside” on the back.

A few players who we didn’t rate highly at the time but would be excellent for us at this level:
Job
Beck
Nemeth
Deane
Ricard (though you could argue we did rate him as top PL scorer) Champ Sheff Utd debut?

yeah a decent list players would have any of them now, quite liked Beck but after he left the Boro did not hear too much about him but sounds like he suffered with injuries and retired early

Job played a big part in 04/05 when we finished 7th. Viduka was injured for a big chunk, which meant Job partnered Jimmy a lot.

Although he wasn't prolific, he did pretty well from what I recall.

Is our Bam one of them?

In the 20 Year Celebration meeting, Gareth said it is the best chant of any football team anywhere in the world :)

I like re-watching his late winner at Old Trafford after Man Utd had come back from 2 goals down. So nonchalant and languid looking. Like a lot of his goals I suppose.

That was a quality goal. The build up was class, but often cut out when they show the goal.

The season we re-signed Juninho and he got injured in pre-season so Job had to play "in the hole" he was very good for a spell. He really suited playing there. Completely over-looked once Juninho came back of course and then we went back to a more standard 442.

I actually remember Job and Juninho playing upfront in a 442 quite a few times.

In fact wasn't that the formation in the final?
