Joy Division in the US?

Joy Division were already starting to move to a more electrical sound by the time they started recording "Closer". I believe even if JD had done the USA gigs with Ian Curtis they still would have gone the synthpop route.

Probably would have been a slightly darker sound though. Like Movement only good

Love Joy Division, but not sure the music would have travelled well.

Music was pretty deep for young people and videos of the inside derelict factories in Manchester probably would not work well in California.

Even in the UK - Joy Division were a bit off centre loved by John Peel late night radio audiences, but not typical TOTP/Chart stuff.

Maybe not in California but central steel belt and East coast they would have gone down well and had a lot of empathy.

Even in CA they'd have been picked up by college radio and probably become a cult band.

They were never going to trouble the top 10 in the UK, let alone the USA, and to they'd have just had more fans globally rather than going full chartbusters in the US.
