Juninho Coming Home

At Liverpool for our last away game that season, I had tickets in a posh Liverpool box (through a client of friend) and there were a bunch of Liverpool posh boys (that line surprised me as well) who were saying what a joke it was that a rich owner could ruin a player's career by signing him for a crap team and it was why the premier league was a bad idea as anybody could afford good players now.

That whinge has turned out wrong for at least 2 reasons

Juninho had his career ruined so badly he won the world cup 5 years later
Look at how the premier league has redistributed the wealth.

He was a fantastic player that we were so lucky to see in his prime. How good would he have been in his third spell if he hadn't done his cruciate ligament in that preseason friendly.

Very true, imagine if we actually stayed up & the players mentioned we were suppose to sign actually did

Like you zorro I was a massive Brazil fan. I had been since my Dad took me to the Town Hall Crypt in about 1963 or 4 to see films of their 1958 and 1962 World Cup wins. Reel to reel projector footage in black and white. I was hooked and still am to this day.

that would have been the likes of vava and didi.

I love watching the old archive stuff as pele get all the credit but it’s garincha that has always fascinated me from that era his incredible life and his god given talent.

btw if you love that 70s side have you read
The Beautiful Team: In Search of Pele and the 1970 Brazilians

It’s a great read ( I read it on holiday) it’s a british bloke that like us all was captivated by these exotic names he saw beamed through his tv screen as a kid jairzinho tostao etc do he goes on a quest to Brazil to track them all down and see where they are now. Each chapter is dedicated to a different player from that side it’s a brilliant idea and a brilliant book.

Btw does anyone else remember this from the fa cup final wembley as Juno was the first Brazilian to play in the cup final so pele and zico flew over to watch it and I remember seeing them both and some through a Boro scarf to him and pele held it above his head.

did anyone else remember this or even have a pic god it was surreal seeing my childhood idol and pele.

He was a very special player, he cared for the club and the area.
A brilliant player, the best I've ever seen in a Boro shirt ando best I'm ever likely to see.
Emerson was some player as well, I thought he had incredible talent, his head wasn't always screwed on mind.

Think it’s high time we had a statue of the little genius alongside Wilf and George 👍🏻 I’m sure we’d all be up for throwing a good few quid in just on here alone

🐔

I'd rather chuck it in for people who served the club through thick and thin, rather than those that buggered off as soon as we got relegated to save their world world cup place.

Absolutely no issue with him doing that BTW, but let's not pretend that he "loves the club" or any of that guff - he certainly doesn't warrant a statue, he was a brilliant player and that's it; but we've had a few of those over the years.

Three of us Boro were in the Holte End for Brazil v Sweden in the summer of 1995 so saw Juninhos first game in England. Anyone else there? It was a poor Brazil team and the match was dull. I think one of the national anthems was ballsed up as well.

What charity is it for?

great question - I think I read NHS.
If it is we are all riding the populist wave - and it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
These NHS charities have, in the main, tons of cash.

At the same time there are all sorts of other organisations out there desperate for cash - food banks, hospices, kids poverty groups. I guess they aren’t sexy enough.

I totally agree, the NHS should be funded by taxes not charity.

It would be far better to donate the money to homeless charities or food banks.
As you say it is a populist wave at the moment, but by the time they get around to playing the match the Covid virus will be in the past and there will be many more homeless people and struggling families due to mass unemployment.

Yes the nhs should be funded properly by the government.

I’ve heard nothing about which charities will be supported, which is unusual, it’s normally the prime motive to set up an event?

Did anyone else see pele and zico at Wembley that day ?

Sorry I didn't.

Lets show Shearer and Wright what they can do with their 9th best ranking

We paid big money for Juninho (about £50m in todays money) and paid him £13k a week which made him the highest paid player at the time in the EPL, the equivalent today would £200k a week. To me he was worth it for the pleasure he gave and the £12m fee back.

Apparently it is for victims of Covid
