Karanka: I went to Middlesbrough and it felt like I went to the best place in the world

At a time he was in the early days at the club, I went through the situation Ronald’s recently found himself in, losing a twin during child birth. My head was battered and I was seriously struggling with things. One thing that helped was Aitors Middlesbrough. It got me out of the house, into the pub for a pint before the game and seeing my mates again after pretty much avoiding everyone.
His teams will mean a lot to me for more than purely football reasons.

Sorry you had to go through that mate. I still remember reading Bob Mortimer's autobiography and there's a passage where he mentions the absolute void of emotion that comes with depression. How he'd be at boro games and feel nothing, just going through the motions. Then one day we scored and he got that rush and celebrated, that temporary suspension of all that is bad in the world and he knew he had turned a corner on a personal level. I think it's truly wonderful the effect football, for the likes of us, tied to a real team with the ups and downs, and the culture around the sport can have on us.

I'm glad and hope you continue to be in a better place fella 👍

It was almost 8 years ago now, there was another backstory which now makes the event even worse really. I just tried to make sure everyone else was happy around me whilst hiding behind my own defensive coping mechanisms. Even now when I start looking after myself there are certain triggers that open cracks again. I’ve spoken to psychologists and everything links back.

Anyway, enough about that, Aitors clean sheet kings were simply superb. Funnily enough my little girl was only 1 when we visited the pre season training camp in Marbs. Her first footy photo was with Leo and Aitor 🙌

Wishing he had never signed for boro being an out and out geordie boy.. wishing he had stayed at Rangers as he was an out an out Rangers lad.. wishing he hadn’t went to Italy as he was an out an out English man.. wishing he’d have signed for Man Utd so he wouldn’t have done his cruciate and went on to be the new George Best..

He loved Rangers, loved Everton but hated Boro.. his biggest regret in football. Lol
And there was me thinking that out and out geordies "don't care about us one way or the other really"...🤣

I thought he was shyt when he played for us, gave the ball away too much and was no where near how people made him out to be.

A poor man’s Diego Fabbrini - a true baller

A perfect example of someone trapped in their past.

Another big match for him today. A win at home this afternoon takes them out of the relegation zone.

You would have thought he would have gotten into presenting - John Fashanu was good on Gladiators, Kammy is ace on Sky Sports.

He’s pretty much reduced himself to the knee injury, getting fat, crying and ‘that goal’ vs Scotland.
