Kim McGuinness (Lab) is the first North East Mayor

I live in her new mayoral area, or whatever you call it. I think Driscoll was a far better candidate and consider he was an independent, had a far stronger and more visible campaign. He had clear policies compared to her baseless ideas. Knowing how strong the resources and finances were supporting the Labour candidates in the north east were, I would say they have done very poorly. Yes they won (apart from Teesside) but they should have been streets ahead.

Yep, at long last I've voted for someone/something and they've actually gone and won. 🎉🎆🎉🎆 Felicitations from the Labour heartlands of North Yorkshire.(y)
I used to think that years ago , but eventually realised that they are all in it to feather their own nests.
Now who was it that spouted a policy of reducing the Commons to 400 members and getting rid of of all the hangers on in the Lords ?

Driscoll had a huge fund raising team behind him. Going by what his supporters were saying on X these last months you'd have thought he had it in the bag. He was trounced.

Only the well off folk in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Darlington voting Tory these days. Talk about Turkeys!

Please forgive me. I don’t want to cause trouble and argue with people. I don’t think she was a very good candidate, don’t know much about her so can’t really say that I think she was any good when I’ve had a lot of negative things with Labour councillors and mps recently. Also, my brother in law had a lot to do with the campaigns for the North East Labour candidates and I really don’t like him. Would rather go for a drink with Cruella and BJ. Smiley face, laughing emoji. Utb

I voted for Jamie. He was treated appallingly by the Labour leadership, and his supporters had similar treatment at the hands of the local party. He did a great job as North of Tyne mayor. Just goes to show the power of the party brand.

Ho hum, we move on. Or rather, they do. At least I don't live in a town that would vote for a Tory I suppose...

Live in the area & voted in the election, only two leaflets through the door one for Labour & one for the Conservatives.

I knew of Driscoll's campaign having through North Tyne Mayor & have been to a couple of the hustings (he gave it the big I am which would've turned some people off but everyone else was either insipid or mental), but for people not engaged with politics let alone local politics it would still be odd seeing the ballot paper with party name & symbol for the other candidates & his being blank.

I think he did well to get the number of votes he did, those votes were for him the other votes were for the parties they represent.
