Anyone who thinks we are capable of nabbing 2nd spot must surely believe we can win the league too.
Auto’s is a huge ask. We would need to beat the vast majority of the top half teams we have still to play and especially those currently above us. Blackburn have really surprised me, but Moggas teams often drop off as the season wears on. To get to the top 2 we really need to be winning against Bleakburn, Coventry and QPR. 3 massive games with 2 being away. I think that is a tough ask in itself, never mind looking at top 2 come May.
Since 2015/16, our promotion year, 82 points would have secured 2nd spot on only one occasion, 89 is more the marker. I can’t see 82 being enough this year either, but appreciate why that figure came about. Whilst it is mathematically feasible, it is also probably around a 25/1 bet for me for Boro to finish top 2.
I get the excitement and hope, but realistically top 2 is fairytale stuff. Yesterday we struggled to overcome Reading, the week before Mansfield and before that Blackpool. We are a tough, resilient and improving team. Wilder has us well organised and in a decent run of form. The play-offs should realistically be achievable. I would snap your hand off for 3rd spot and the advantage that offers right now. if we can get the new lads firing and putting more of our chances away that is doable, anything better an unlikely bonus. We will come up against more teams making life difficult and looking to play as Reading did and Wilder wont always be able to get the ‘expected win’ though. By the end of the month we will have a more realistic view on what we can achieve. Here‘s hoping for the best though.
