Work fine in places like Holland it's just the mentality of some Brits thay the get something for nothing. See dodging train fares as another example.

It is not only the British, I was in Niort last year and a large group of French people got up and walked away from paying their bill that must have run into a few hundred Euros.

Two true stories.
1. About 10 years ago my (now late) wife and her friend were shopping in Boro. They went to Lloyds for some lunch. They left when and were talking about the meal on the way home when they realized neither had paid. They were at the roundabout near Dormanstown by that time. They turn the car round and went back to Boro and paid leaving a good tip and apologies to the lad who served them.
2. Police came into Pig & Whistle in Redcar just before Christmas and took 4 strangers back to Bengal Spice in Redcar to pay their bill after doing a runner. The waiter saw them go in to Pig and called the police. Never charged them but at least they paid. They were not regular pig customers

That's how it works at my local as well.
It's great.
One night years ago I had a little bit more to drink than usual and I actually forgot to pay.
I had walked half way home before I realised.
I went straight back and apologised but they were fine.
They know me and they had my card locked up so it wasn't a problem at all.
I was more annoyed at me than they were.
They were just pleased I'd had that good a time.

In the late 70s me and this Welsh bloke arrived at a place in Germany to work on the Shipyard. We asked the lads in the digs where we could get a bite to eat nearby and they directed us to a pub. We went, and had a couple of pints and a pizza. The next day after work we were in the same pub with about a dozen of the lads and we realised that the previous evening they hadn't charged us for the pizzas. We told the barman and he took the money. A little later he sent over a tray of Asbach shots for all of us.

You're absolutely spot on. I work in an extremely busy restaurant in Boro (not gonna name it possibly for legal reasons) and every time I ask for a wage rise whilst showing them other wages offered by other restaurants the owner always brings the tips/service charge into it. Seriously thinking of moving on after my annual leave but I'm 60 this year making it very difficult to do so.

Might just be a British thing? On the continent you have tabs for just beers as a matter of course. It works very well.

I used to work in a boozer in Holland, we only gave tabs to the regulars. Some let them run pretty high.

I would go out more often if our pubs were more European style.
Table service and paying a bill at the end is so much more civilised than having to wrestle your way to the bar.
If I have to wait more than 5 mins to get served I just walk out.

It's not something I've ever enjoyed, personally.
I don't mind table service being a thing, it's pretty much essentially with outdoor seating abroad, but I really don't like tabs.
Waiting ages to pay for my food and/or drinks when I've finished because they're busy, or finding out it's a lot more than expected, and the pressure to tip regardless of your enjoyment of the meal.
It's obviously not their fault, it's the system, but I'm not a fan.

When I worked there, I remember one guy paying his tab at the local - it was north of 300 guilders.

Sort of but tbh I absolutely hate it atm. Can't be done with the chew anymore but nobody stepping up. Would like something with less involvement. Prefer now to just be able to go in,do the work and get out. Wish I gotten out of there a long time ago cos pretty much all I know is from there.

Have you looked at care home work? There are agencies out there that can sort you out. Massive change of pace but could be ideal?
